OBD Speed Sensor Location on Transmission
I just placed an order for the OBD speed sensor for a 2001 Ford Transmission 3.0 4X4. The transmission type is 4R44E. I crawled under my truck to locate the speed sensor on the transmission and could not locate where it is placed. Need some help locating it? Had a friend pull the code P1720. Ordered the part real cheap $18.99 at Advance Auto Parts just have problems locating where the sensor is?

Do you mean P0720 (Insufficient Input From OSS sensor)?
The Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor is located on the driver's side of the tranny, upper rear.
There is an Overdrive Drum Speed sensor, also located on the driver's side of the tranny, upper front.
If your tranny is a 5R44E and not a 4R44E, there is also another speed sensor, called an Intermediate Shaft Speed (ISS) sensor. See: vmtp.com
You will need a T-30 torx socket in order to remove the bolts that secure the speed sensors to the tranny.

usmccope is my son and I was trying to help him out with this issue. The fellow who gave him the "p1720" code is not confident that this was or is the correct code. Something about his diagnostic not updated?
I think that we need to start with the basics and the symptoms of what is going on with his truck. The valve body seperator plate/gasket has already been completed as referenced in the tech thread/article. The new replacement seperator plate was the same for the 5r44e and the 4r44e so it wasn't an issue.
How can we determine what transmission he actually has in his truck = 2001 Ford Ranger/extended cab/4x4/3.0/VIN # 1FTZR15U91PA31688
