i am going to look at a 85 deisel hopefullt saturday. The guy said it runs but keeps dying on him, i dont know what he means. I dont know if it will run for awhile and then die randomly or if it will just start and die right away. What my question is what could cause either of these problems???
I dont know anyhting about these older deisels and only a little about deisels in general, but ive owned ford trucks all my life. Ive always done my own work and have been working as a mechanic for awhile now. But ive only delt with gas, but its all suck squeeze bang blow.
Any help or suestions is appreciated, and thanks in advance
Nik
I just talked to the guy and he said that it will idle fine and you can go down the road i little and then it will die but it will start right back up. Also he said it ran great up till a couple days ago.
There is a TSB re stalling at stop signs and decellerating on cornera etc. It refers to a dirty IP....... although bad lift pump fuel pressure, IP electrical fuel shutoff problems etc can do it too. Does not sound too serious just fuel related. Also if the fuel level in the tank selected is at or below 1/4 full that could be a pickup problem in the fuel tank... switch to the tank with over 1/4 full and see what happens.
The valley pan is down under the intake manifold covering the push rods and lifters.
It also seals the top of the engine.
85 trucks have a water seperator mounted on the fire wall, drivers side right in the corner of the fire wall and fender with a pull ring on to to drain it.
Famous for not sealing after you drain it, letting air into the fuel supply line before the lift pump.
So people have had luck just shoving a bolt in the drain line to stop the air from getting in, others replaced the stock unit with aftermarket water seperators.
ok , i thought thats where the valley pan is. The guy said he put a new fuel filter in it but he doesnt know about diesels so i think maybe he didnt fill it with anything so....
Clogged fuel filter, dead or dying lift pump, a hole in the fuel line before the lift pump so it sucks air, dirty air filter, broken pick up tube in the fuel tank, water seperator sucking air are just a couple of many.
Just need to start working through each one to see where the problem is.
My first choices are usually the cheapest ones, but they are all important.
My first thing here would be, does it have any/enough fuel in the tank?
The fuel gauges are not the most accurate on the market till you have a feel for them.
