Seeing as how it goes from your engine right into the firewall im guessing its heat, not 100% sure though.

It don't run into the firewall I think. It runs down splits into severa metal tubes and goes into the heads or block on each side.

The silver "thing" is part of the exhaust recirc system (emissions). A lot of times the steel portions of the system rust out, and develop leaks. Wait till the tubing on the back of the heads rust out, that is a treat. It may also be that the clamps that hold the tubing together have broken, try putting a hose clamp on them, if the steel portion is not broken, it might seal back up.

Just a hissing sound is a minor leak, if it were to sound like a true exhaust leak, then I would look into that as a cause of your idle problem. But if it just a hissing then probably not. But, if what you are hearing is vacuum leaking and not the emissions tubing, then that could be a problem. Finding vacuum leaks can be tough, try using some carb cleaner on your vacuum lines that are in the area of the hissing sound, if there is a vacuum leak, then the carb cleaner will get sucked into the system and make the engine surge for a moment and then idle back down. Vacuum will continue to hiss for a few moments after the engine is shut off, I have never personally heard exhaust continue to leak after the engine quits running.

yeah that is what gets me. Well I was at napa and wanted to get some rubber hose to replace the stock vinyl lines but the guy their said they almost never leak just were they join the rubber footings. So he told me to use seal all instead never heard of that but I guess I will give it a try. Used a a propane drip torch around the plenum and nothing so I guess that is a good thing.

So if this is for the emissions it should not effect my idle or running really. I just worry about the hissing. Want the truck working optimuim. My hunting truck nothing more important.
