speedometer problems

hi there
i have a 2001 f250 diesel
the speedometer just started going crazy. it reads the speed okay but then it tries to go to zero then bounce back up again and it does this repeatidly. drive fine otherthan that. i'm not sure how these thing work but i would think its a connection issue. just looking for where to start. would preffer not to have to pay to bring it somewhere.
thanks
Patrick

You might try and remove and clean the connector to the speed sensor (VSS) on top of your rear end.. If that does not fix it, you might consider replacing the sensor.. Napa P/N 530780 for around $11.. (Napa calls it a ABS sensor)
