Last night I was trying to fix a wiring problem with my 1992 F150 4.9 with a manual transmission. To begin with, I noticed that the brake lights were not working and the backup lights were not working. After replacing a fuse, the brake lights work. Still no reverse lights though. The bulbs look perfect too. I am suspecting that it is the reverse switch on the transmission, however I do not know how to remove it. Any ideas? There is also talk on some other post about the "neutral safety switch". Where is that located? When I first got the truck, I jumped some wires under the dash on what I thought was a "clutch safety switch", because I had to darn near push my foot through the firewall to get the truck to start. Also, the passenger rear light does not flash with the switch on. All of the others flash.
There is a manufactured hole on the passenger side of my transmission (looks like it should have a rubber boot but it does not). I think dirt & water may be getting in there and possibly shorting things out, but I wanted to rule out other things and ask the experts.
reverse light switch on manual trannys is almost always located in the side. will be 1 or 2 wires and more often than not it will just screw into the housing like an oil sending unit. if you are having trouble finding it you could go to the parts store and ask them to show you a picture or even the actual part. as for the hole, if there isnt fluid running out of it im pretty sure its made that way and is nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the reply wolf! I am pretty sure I had seen the reverse switch, but just was not sure how to remove it. My thought was just like yours, that it is just screwed on. I will have to try that tonight. The hole is probably a 2" x 3" hole (sort of a rectangle, but narrow on one end) and is located fairly close to the switch.
Oh, one more thing. My repair book says to check the fuse and the circuit breaker. I know where the fuse is, but is there a circuit breaker anywhere in the wiring that leads to the lights?
What happened to me on one signal not working was the connector that plugs in to the turn signal switch had one prong broken. They replaced that one & one more that was about ready to break. No more problems.
