5R55W Solenoid Pack Question
Hello all, still no answer regarding the hard downshift question re my 02 Mountaineer. Don't really want to buy a new solenoid pack at close to $300 unless I'm pretty sure it will fix the problem. This leads me to my question:
Does the <input name="IL_MARKER" type="hidden">solenoid pack control lock-up of the torque converter? If not what does?
Thanks in advance.

i dont think i wold jump onto the solenoid right off. its always a good idea to drain the oil , change filter, and refill with new oil and test. you got over 100k miles and probably on the original oil??
when the pan is off, you can take off the solenoids and blow out the ports and wash it off. if there is crud that sticks the pistons in the bore, that could help to make things shift better.

Check eBay for as a source for the 5R55W solenoid pack, they are considerably less expensive.
Here's a how-to replace it with photos:

consider NOT doing a flush. just tell them you want the oil drained, pan removed, cleaned, filter changed, and new oil. Takes about 5 quarts if you only do the trans pan. If they try to pump out the converter and lines, you can get about 13 quarts. I just do the 5 in the pan and do it every year. Not perfect, but the crud is all in the bottom of the pan and stuck to the valve body. Thats what needs wiped off and cleaned.

Since there is no dipstick where do you check the fluid level on the auto tranny; I want to change my fluid and filter also. It shifts fine and smooth. Just bought the car from original owner - 02' eddie bauer with 4.0 V6 and auto 4wd. Also anyone know if there is anyway to repair cracks on the back fiberglass tailgate. Thanks

Thanks for the info and your reply to a previous post about delayed / somewhat harsh 3-4 upshifts in my '04 Explorer.
One dumb question- is there a standpipe on the inside of the drain plug so that there is actually a volume of fluid in the pan? I'm trying to understand how one would check for correct fluid level by observing a small stream or drip flow coming from the drain plug at the bottom of the pan. I am ready to do this job but want to be sure how to get a precise fluid level, including allowing the fluid to circulate adequately before checking the level.
Also, have you observed crud in the solenoid valve ports?
Thanks again.

Gentlemen,
I took my car to a trusted Ford dealer in the Chicago area. They talked me into a transmission flush. The service manager I know personally said that the filter does not need servicing and that the flush would back flush clean the metal screen. They did not recommend a solenoid remove and clean either.
I took the flush at $160.00. The delayed 3-4 upshift and hard clunk upshift used to happen a few times a day has not happened since the flush, over a week ago.

This may be a stupid question but do you check the fluid with the car running or not? thanks.
