hey all, on the truck in my sig, i broke the head off of a bolt on my front axle yoke. ..don't know how but when i looked under my truck there was only 3 out of 4 under there!!! ok, so i'm kinda assuming that i'm not going to be able to get the rest of the bolt out so i'm thinking of changing the yoke over to a u-bolt style yoke instead of the factory strap style. has anyone done this before? is there a crush sleeve on the dana 60 axle or does the pinion nut get torqued down to a certain number? i've change my rear pinion seal using the "count the amount of turns it takes to come off and use the same to re-install" method...would this work the same for the front? or because i'm using a different yoke everything would have to be set as new? any help would be awesome. thanks
I can't answer re the crush sleeve, so if you are set on changing the yoke you can just ignore this.
But I'm sure you can get that bolt out. It's in a decent location to get to compared to some. You probably didn't break the bolt, it just broke. Probably a bad temper on that bolt. Maybe replace them all 4 with new, just to be sure.
Doesn't seem like a problem that would warrant changing to a forged yoke.
If there is some bolt still sticking up you could slot it with a moto tool and disk, heat it up with an acetylene torch and try that way with a screw driver. Thats how I got mine out. In fact, the heat from grinding the slot allowed one bolt to come out without using acetylene.
Ford puts a locktite patch on their factory bolts which makes them hard to remove. I replaced mine with new Ford bolts but I wirebrushed off the locktite patch. I don't think everyone will agree with me on removing the patch.
