I think that my power steering pump is going, but i'm not too sure. When I turn the wheel, there is a whining noise. It is very loud, but the steering doesn't feel any different. When I am stopped at light or a stop sign, I can hear the whining when my foot is on the break. The harder I press the break, the louder the whining gets. It is extremely loud if I am pressing the break and turning the wheel. What could this be? Is it power steering, or possibly the break master cylinder or what? I just don't want to be driving down the road and the power steering go out on me. What do you guys think?
I would consider flushing the fluid. Mine was similar to yours before I put in Mobil 1 synthetic last week, now the brakle pedal is much firmer, and the pump doesnt whine when turning at idle. Here is the link to the flush procedure, pretty easy stuff.
I agree with Tom .. if the flush doesn't help, you might need a new pump.
I was pretty disappointed after flushing my power steering fluid, but after about 6 weeks the noise was almost completely gone. I used a synthetic ATF.
If you don't notice a difference right away, don't change the pump until you give it chance to run awhile.

Your are right Eric.. it does take a while sometimes to get that air out of the system..
X4, I did this procedure also, but I just wanted to change out the old fluid and put some good new stuff in. The Mobil One syn. is expensive but worth its weight in gold I thinks. Report back, let us know how you make out Clint..
