Exclamation looking for 73-79 F-series or 78-79 Bronco low mount swing lock mirrors

there was a user in the Ontario chapter, i can't remember who, but they offered me a set of mirrors, i think user Red Ford Truck had a set for sale,

anyone out there have a nice set?

they look like the mirror in the picture below, and the '80 and up mirrors will not work, they need that bend in the A frame, otherwise they don't look right on the truck, these mirrors are specific to the 73-79 Ford F-series trucks and the 78-79 Bronco's

if you have a nice set, please send me some pictures if you can, and a price, and your location,

send all pictures and info too,

brenton_henry@hotmail.com

also i live in London, so anything in the area would be great, if you live further away, let me know, and maybe we can work something out,

Jeffs bronco Graveyard sells Brand New ones that are just like the Ford ones only better for $49 U.S. now with the Canadian Dollar almost at par it's a pretty good deal just make sure you insist and get confirmation from the Bronco Graveyard rep that they will be shipped U.S. Postal service(not UPS), that way you don't pay brokerage fees and it keeps the cost down, also then Canada Post only adds a $5 handling fee plus provincial sales tax.

Here's the link: Door Mirror, Support and Head

Good luck.

Rick.

Are you looking for a pretty set for restoration? Then get the JBG ones that Rick suggests.

I discovered on the weekend that there have been some subtle differences in the arms over the years. Rick gave me the old set off his Bronco, plus some spare heads (Thanks Rick! ) and I found that the lower brackets on his arms did not match up with the lower holes in my doors. The only real difference I could find is the little torsion spring setup in the arms from Rick (the cylindrical cartridge between the upper bracket and arm) whereas mine didn't have this and were solid. Don't know if Ford changed them or not over the years, or different part suppliers....

At any rate, I've found out here from one of numberdummy's excellent info posts was that all the trucks were shipped without mirrors, and the mirror holes drilled & installed at the dealer due to the myriad of different factory mirror options.

yep NumberDummy is a true treasure on here, i have learned a great deal from him, and i did find that interesting how Ford didn't put mirrors on the trucks when they left the factory, instead they just put the small car like mirror on the seat, and it was left up to the customer on what type of mirror they wanted,

i thought that was really neat, compared with today, there are no real options with mirrors anymore, its what Ford gives you, and you have no real choice,

the big issue with ordering new from JBG is i don't have a credit card, (i refuse to get into any kind of debt with credit cards) and my family doesn't really use them either, and the ones that do, probably won't let me borrow there card, even if i paid them the money before hand!

also i can't cross the border! i have no passport and i don't have a enhanced drivers license, thus i am up the creek with out a paddle! i just wish we had a Ford truck parts retailer in Ontario, and in till i get a enhanced drivers liecense i won't be crossing the border anytime soon, well maybe i can swim for the mirrors? lol or send a relative across to Michigan?

also anyone try the dealership? maybe i can get them to actually open a book? instead of the old, "well our computers don't go back that far" maybe someones mind will click and go "oh yeah, i know those mirrors, we got a set back on this one shelf" but that would be dream,

Hey Brent, are you the one posting the kijiji ads for the Ford parts "call Mike" on Ebenezer road?

I've heard about him from a friend, but never actually been there or heard of it until a year ago. Strange, because I only work 1 concession away from there....

hey! how did ya figure that was me? did you see my ad looking for mirrors as well?

yep that is my ad, Mike is a great guy, and he is well worth a try,

funny story, this is how i found Mike,

well we where driving out that way and i spotted a old Ford truck box, thus me and my father went back to the house, and asked about it, the guy said its a older box, its for a 67-72, and i already knew it wouldn't work on my truck,

but i do like the Ranger box emblems, thus i asked, "are you selling them?"

he wanted way too much money, then he said he wanted to keep them, since someone will want them with the box, well the box is starting to rust out, thus how much longer does he have to sell it? ah well,

he then said go try Mike, and gave us directions, and thus we found his collection of old Ford trucks, and his barn full of truck parts, and Mike was a real nice guy, and me and my father have known him for almost 2 years now,

anyways, that is where i got my short box 4x4 F-150 frame from and many other parts, also the real funny part is my truck has got parts from here in the past! you see i asked Mike if he knew the previous owner of my truck, i gave him his name and described the truck,,,

he said oh ya, i know him and that truck, ya he came here and got parts for that truck here, (this all happened in the late 90s and it was finished in 2000)

ya my truck is on its second resto, mind you the one we are doing is a proper resto, no Mickey Moused wiring or any doggy work! as the body work was horrible on the truck, thus i always say the truck is on its 3rd life! once from factory, then its second life when the previous owner did his resto and now ours!

long story short, i do Mike a favor by advertising his parts, and thus i either get free parts, or at a steep discount, heck he gave me a free 9" Ford 31 spline 3.50

mind you i have gotten Mike lots of business and he has sold many parts and even some engines, and its no problem for me to post ads on the internet and reply to e-mails to help other people out, plus its fun to be able to help out fellow Ford truck owners, otherwise Mikes parts would go unnoticed and thus be wasted sitting there,

if ya don't mind if ya do get in contact with Mike please mention my name, that would be great, his number is 519-859-1959

Yeah, I figured it was you from the mirrors ad, and "view poster's other ads"

I'll have to visit him next year when I look for a new rear end for my truck... a 9" 3:50 31 spline would be super

He might be the reason I get random people waving at me when I drive my truck on backroads around here.

well the 9" 3:50 31 spline he gave me is being put to use! the one that was in my truck was very wore out and sloppy, but i am sure he has a rear end that will work for you,

also how is that 351w in your truck? i know its a non-factory mod,

but so is my truck! no 4x4 F-series ever had a 302w in the 70s, not in till the 80s did Ford put a 302w in a 4x4 F-series, personally the Windsor motors are great in my books, and my family has had good luck with them, and some users in the 73-79 section put them down, but then they have 351m/400s..... thus there knocking something they don't have, personally a 302w would be my choice over a 351m/400 any day! the Mustang market has really helped the small block Ford engines (289-302w-5.0-351w-5.8)

However, you won't be able to buy them for $49.95 each...because dealer net cost is $57.53. MSRP is $82.19.

My guess is....that JBG either bought a pile of these mirrors when the price was less, or are buying them from the same supplier that Ford bought them from.

Ford did not make these mirrors (or any other type, regardless of the year). Ford gave an outside manufacturer the specs. Then whoever this was, made them...then sold them to Ford.

This mirror and a similar type: D6TZ17696A (obsolete) were used 1973/77.

The D6TZ mirror has the same mirror head, but different brackets that have a span of 6 11/16" between the top and bottom mounting brackets.

The D4TZ mirror has a span of 7 19/32" between the mounting brackets.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1978/79, Ford offered two more of this same style of mirror kits. The difference is...the mirror head is larger (6" x 9" as opposed to 5 1/4" x 8 1/4").

One mirror kit (D8TZ17682A-obsolete) came with a mirror head that the glass was glued directly to the head without a gasket.

The other kit (D9TZ17682A-obsolete) came with a mirror head that the glass was mounted into the head with a gasket.

Why would Ford go thru this rigamarol with these mirror heads? All of which...btw...could be bought separately.

Why did Ford bother offering FOUR different mirrors of this same style for these trucks?

Who the hell knows!

Someone's prolly gonna ask...which mirrors are correct? Good question! The answer is...who knows?

Since the dealers installed all the outside mirrors, any 1973/77 could have either D4TZ or D6TZ.

A 1978/79 could also have these same two mirrors, or D8TZ or D9TZ.

Whatever the dealer had in stock was installed, so who knows what mirrors those could be?

btw: Besides these four low mount swing-loks, Ford offered 11 different types of other mirrors for these trucks. That's right: ELEVEN!

MADNESS!

amazing, i never thought i would see Bill (NumberDummy) posting in the Ontario chapter, welcome to Canuck land!

and thanks for all that info, i had no idea there was 4 different mirrors of the same low mount swing lock style! and i already knew Ford had a huge amount of different mirrors and they where dealer installed, because if they factory installed the mirror, then they would have to fill the holes and repaint the door for a different mirror style,

but all that info came from you Bill, thus thanks for all that you do! you are a treasure on here!

also our local Ford dealers are lazy, they don't even want to help me track down any mirrors, they just go what year..... sorry we can't help you,

maybe i should run these part numbers by them,

D4TZ17696A is still available from Ford. The other mirror kits and the mirror heads are obsolete.

I can tell you which obsolete parts vendors and FoMoCo Dealers in the US have D6TZ, D8TZ and D9TZ mirror kits and the mirror heads, but...

I cannot tell you if any Canadian dealers have any, because the two parts locator systems I use to search for obsolete parts do not include any sources in Canada.

A few years ago, the parts guy at the Ford dealer in Ingersoll was willing to look stuff up in the old system (microfiche???) for me... Don't know if they still would or not.

Maybe if you take the actual part numbers to the dealer they may be more willing to help.

Caveat Emptor = Let the buyer beware.

The pic of your truck shows this type of mirror on it.

The problem is, if you replace them...you have to get the same exact mirrors you have now.

The span between D4TZ (7 19/32") and D6TZ (6 11/16") is different between the top/bottom brackets, which means...

If you get the wrong type, the holes will not line up with the brackets...then you have to fill the holes, repaint the door...then drill new holes.

I dunno what the span is between these two and D8TZ/D9TZ, because the parts catalog doesn't say.
