I've heard you can run dyed or "off-road" diesel in the 7.3's. Is this true? Is there anything that you can damage by doing this ? I was wanting to know, because I was on fumes the other day ( 2 miles to emplty on the display) - had a transfer fuel tank on another truck w/ plenty pink diesel, but, I just wasn't sure it wouldn't mess nothin' up ?????? What's the word ?
I have used it in a pinch as well, I did not notice any difference at all. I expect it may be better than road use, because I don't think it is ultra low sulfur. My father has a cummins and he uses it often, he also got caught once. I don't recall the fine, but it was very high (that was in Virginia).
At least in Oregon, the only difference is the red dye added to off-road fuel. The politicians here didn't think that off-road users should be able to use a fuel compatable with the older engines - only ultra-low sulfer diesel.
We have 7 T444Es/7.3s that legally use dyed fuel (public school buses), thats all they have ever used unless we have to buy fuel out on the road. And the only dyed fuel that is available to us is ULSD.
We also only use the dyed fuel in our other 8 diesels which include among others one 6.0 Powerstroke, one VT365 and one MaxxForce 7/6.4
I believe there was only a difference when they first started with this ultra low sulfer stuff. Only then was the red stuff different then the green.. Now, as far as I understand, it is all the same.

Our farm tanks are red "high sulpher". It is listed as a different blend, you can get ultra low without road tax but I have never seen that died.
If the catch you, they will rape your wallet like Roman Polanski rapes a 12 yo but without the benefit of the qualludes and the champaign. You will take it like a man with no lube.
If I remember correctly, they fine you $1,000 - $1,100 per gallon. It's a pretty hefty fine...IF you get caught. There were a couple times I filled up both tanks with Off Road Diesel in my old IDI. Thankfully I never got caught. I'm all legit now though lol.
