I guess my real question is this...........

I have to pick up 4 tons of wood pellets... 1 ton per skid.

Can I do this in 2 trips 4000lbs per trip or make it 3??

thanks

We put two one ton pallets of wood pellets in the back of my Dad's '96 F-250 once. It was definitely overloaded, but we didn't have very far to go.

I think that truck was rated at 8800 or 9900 GVWR wasn't it? I can't remember, but it seems it's like 2500 lbs or something. The weight ratings have gone up since 2001 and I think the truck would not be rated to haul that in the bed in two loads. I think it'd be three.

2001 Ford F250 SC has a GVWR of 8800 and payload capacity of 3355/2715 for the 2WD and 2905/2270 for the 4WD. The gas truck has the higher payload/diesel has lower payload, as the diesel weighs more you lose payload capacity over the gas engine(s). Payload needs to account for passengers, options, etc. So if you and your buddy are 200 lbs each you're under 2000 lbs if you have the 4WD.

I don't know if the truck is 2WD or 4WD, but it's either 2715 lbs for the 2WD or 2270 for the 4WD. If one skid is a ton you've got capacity for one skid at a time, four trips if you want to stay within "specs". Some of the guys responding have 2005+ trucks and the ratings went up in 2005 and again in 2008 with the redesigns.

I did a little over 2 tons to the scrapper, we tore up a broken forklift and the counterweight alone was over 1 ton. that was about a 25 mile trip. I also brought over a detroit 60 series engine in the bed from Fontana to Los Angeles. It made me nervous but the truck took it real well. That engine was over 3500lbs.

When I got there, they only had 3 tons left. I put 1 full skid (1ton) up front, and Half a skid in behind it. total 3000lbs. Hauled it like it was nothing. Could have easily did 2 full skids (4000 lbs) each trip.

I know for next time.

I have a 2000 2WD SRW 7.3L 6 speed. 2000 pounds is barely noticeable. Truck rides level at about 2500 pounds, and will squat a bit at 3000 pounds but still drive normal. Just drive gently on that gravel road to save tires and suspension.

I have loaded 4000 pounds and considered it too much. The truck drove okay and still had travel in the suspension. But it's just too much weight and the steering was a bit light. That kind of weight should be reserved for the dually crowd.
