I have a 2010 expedition limited that intermittently will not crank over. First time it happened I took it in and out of park without luck then I replaced the battery. Started right up with new battery. Second time about 6 months later, of course the battery is good so I started checking all connections and cleaned batt terminals with no luck. All electrical works but won't crank over. I rapped on the starter with a brass hammer and it cranked and started right up. Replaced starter and two days later, no crank again. Rapped on the bell housing again and it started so I took it to ford dealer and they kept it for 4 days and started every time. They claim it isn't the neutral safety switch. I checked all flywheel teeth and they are good. Of course I'm sure it won't happen again until when my wife is driving and she gets stuck somewhere! Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

No starting issues yet but like I said the problem happens intermittently. The dealer couldn't replicate the problem so nothing was done. I'm curious as to what else could be effected by tapping on the bell housing that allows it to crank over?

 

Thanks for following up, Borolf; I certainly understand how intermittent issues can be frustrating. I'm not a tech, so I'm not the best resource for mechanical questions. What's the current mileage on it?
