plugs tellin me sumthin?
ok, so i pulled the plugs out of my truck yesterday, and most of the plugs looked good, except the rear 2. they were dark and wet smelling of fuel.
so this would usually indicate oil burning correct? but why would it only burn oil on the rear two?
any suggestions, comments or incite?

Black does indicate either oil, running rich, or a misfiring plug.
However, it may not be burning oil. I had a black oily plug due to it being "dead". When it won't fire properly, they can sometimes get a little oil on them during otherwise normal running...over time.
Are you sure it's not just gas, and no oil? Ignoring the fact they're black, it is common to find a plug or two that has fuel on it from the last rotation or so after you cut the ignition.
You can do a compression test, or better yet a leak-down test, or the most common way....put in two new plugs and check them again in 50 miles or so. Maybe swap some ignition wires around, or replace them and the cap also. Chances are high it's an ignition problem.
Can you post a pic of these plugs?
When you say rear plugs, do you mean cylinders 4 and 8 (both sides) or maybe 3 and 4 or 7 and 8 (one side or the other)?

Actually, it was the original poster who mentioned he thought the plugs were telling him oil was being burnt.
Redmanbob has a good point about intake manifold gaskets; however,
The smell of gas and being black tells me igntion or fuel are more likely.
Finally, seeing how it's only the two back cylinders, I sort of rule fuel out (otherewise all 8 should be the same) and look at ignition.
Sure can be hard troubleshooting over the net. Especially those posts where there is a "weird sound", ...like one I posted a while back.....LOL.
ps on pics: digital camera or scanner and a photograph. One way or another, get the pics on your PC. The subscribe to a pic-site, such as www.Photobucket.com It's free. Upload your pics into Photobucket. Once there, you put your cursor on the pic you want to post and a number of web-site address looking options will appear. Cut and paaste the one that begins with [ IMG ] into your post. Once you submit your post, the pic will come up automatically when the post is viewed.

as far as gaskets go, head gaskets and manifold gaskets were replaced less 1000miles ago, no sealant was used. tomarrow i will check the torque on the manifoild and see if anybody has gotten loose. unfortunatley a new cap and rotor is like $35 so it may be a bit before i scrape up the cash. things a wee tight without a job.
speaking of weird sounds and stuff, the other day somone asked me "my battery ends up dead if i dont disconnect after stopping the engine, what causes that?" i responded saying "anything electrical" and said "good luck"
