Hone overdrive in my F-2

Hone overdrive in my F-2
I had mentioned my Hone od and several of you guys expressed interest. I just stuck my camera under the truck and took a couple of pictures.
A simpler operation you could not ask for. Driveshaft from engine comes in one end, drive shaft to rear end goes out the other. When the lever is in "normal" it's 1:1. When it's in "Overdrive" the input drive-shaft is a full 1/3 slower than the rear, dropping RPMs by a third. I have the lever in the cab, on the hump.
By the way, I'm never "normal". What use to be 40 MPH is now sixty! Outruns my brakes. Makes the pig fly faster!
I had to have a new two-part drive shaft made. Installation took an afternoon.
How come nobody makes these anymore? Everwhere I go everbody wants one....slim

From the passenger side.......

Very Cool!..No abnormal vibrations??..Any brake upgrades in your future?
I'm thinking this is just the ticket for those who want to keep they're rigs as stock as possable,..but still go fast...who dosen't like to go fast!
Where did you get it ,how rare, what's it out of ,and how much? all the usual questions...

I'm not sure they do Ross, but I think it's Gear Vendors that does - but not 100% on that. I have been looking at ODs to bolt on to the C6 and I recall them saying they had them to bolt on to manuals as well.
Here's a couple of pics I took a LONG time ago:
Note the transmission lower in the picture, I think that's one.

As far as vibrations go--I hear none over the cackling of my stacks! Lol. You should have heard (and felt) the vibrations at 50 MPH BEFORE I had the OD though. Poor ole truck was screeming for me to slow down.
I don't really have any plans for upgrading the brakes. The ole pig doesn't get out much and when she does, I try to drive her like an old truck with old brakes.
The biggest advantage of the OD is the ability to get out on the highway and actually go somewhere when I want to. BOD (before overdrive), we were pretty-much stuck to close-in destinations.
I think most of you have seen this angle before, but....slim

Man, $2K?
I kinda stole this one. As I recall, I traded it from a fellow at an old truck and auto service center. Neither one of us was sure what it was. The old dog-eared manuel was in with the deal--I took it home and read it. Presto! A workable overdrive.
This may sound normal to most of YOU guys, but these kinda deals almost never seem to work out for me.

Slim~
Thanks for sharing, was looking forward to seeing the pics. I had heard of Hone units but had never seen one, looks nice and compact. The only other o/d units that I am aware of that are currently available are from Advance Adapter and popular with the Jeep / 4x4 crowd. Also not cheap though in the $13-1,500 range and up.

Hone-O-Drive was a 70's thing - all aftermarket
There was a version that mated with a few Tranny's mostly GM, then the version as above then a version that replaced the chunk on the Ford 9" and the GM 12 Bolt that gave you a two speed rearend.
The one "Cool" pictured above is the GearVendors - They bought out the British Co. Laycock-DeNormville which supplied all the Britt and Euro types and was a big thing with Volvos here in the States - the latest model by GV it the Model P - before that was the Model J.
The main OD is the same the front mount is made for each Tranny - The bottom one above is a Ford Toploader 4 Speed there are 4/5 different adaptors to match length and shift mounts. They even make a mount for the T-19.

The internals on these two plus the Borg Warner are sun gear and cone clutch - older models used a 3 gear sun unit and the newer units used a 4 gear.
The GV units are a big thing with RV folks
The Ranger unit is a two speed tranny 7.5" long that fits between the bellhousing and your tranny - comes in under/overdrive.
Another simular unit is made by US Gear.
Taa-Daa.
