Sending Unit for Large Plastic Midship tank?
Where to find one? I would like a new sending unit but can't locate one (JBG, LMC, & DC--nothing). I have a 1978F2504x4, 8100gvwr, dual tanks with the plastic midship tank mounted in a large skid plate. Skid plate is shot too but guess I'll have to fabricate a new bottom. Apparently these aren't available anymore? Thanks

Whitney doesn't have it either. I guess I will just look into repairing what i have (strainer primarily). in terms of monitoring fuel level what I have is fine anyway. i was just going to replace the whole thing while i had everything tore down. Any advice in terms of this? I've seen threads before where people said to just have another fuel filter outside of the tanks and forget the strainer inside the tank. thanks

What's wrong with the sending unit?
Is the dash guage reading in-correctly?
If so...you may not need a new sending unit..just the sending unit's FLOAT!
The float is made from two pieces of copper soldered together.
Solder breaks down, gas seeps in, float slowly settles to the bottom of the tank.
The float (COAZ9202B) is the same 1957/79 car/truck and is available from Ford, the MSRP is $7.41.
The sending units themselves are ALL obsolete. AFAIK, no one is reproducing them and these were a FoMoCo dealer part only originally.
It's possible a dealer or obsolete parts vendor may have NOS original.

The plastic meshed filter screen (strainer) is also available by itself. This slips over the end of the fuel senders pickup tube. =
D1AZ9A011A .. Filter Screen 3/8" I.D. / Available from Ford.
Fits: 1967/79 F100/350's (except with in-cab fuel tank), 1961/79 Passenger Cars, 1966/79 Bronco's & 1961/79 Econolines.
MSRP: $21.73 // FTE sponsor Y2KFORDPARTS.COM price: $15.65.
Autoparts stores also carry these, but there are two different sizes.
You need the one that is 3/8" I.D.
The one that is 5/16" I.D. was only used in 1971/77: Maverick's & Mercury Comets // 1971/79: Pinto's & Mercury Bobcats.

Look at the fuel line where it goes into the carb. See that clamped on neoprene rubber hose? It's connected to the fuel filter that screws directly into the carb.
The filter has threads on one end, a nipple on the other end for the hose to fit over.
There are several different fuel filters, it depends on engine size, type of carb.
btw: The fuel sending unit gasket (COAF9276A) is also available by itself: MSRP: $0.77.

Well i had a few minutes this evening to pull the sending unit out of the tank. It definitely needs a new strainer--it was terribly corroded plus the tube end itself needs a good cleaning. I assume using a brillo pad is ok?? I'll also change the float and the seal while i'm at it. The rear tank sending unit was about in the same shape. Was pleased though that both tanks look great. While i've got everything tore down and trying to ensure great fuel delivery to the 514 stroker---should I bother changing the fuel lines out from the tanks up to the fuel pump? Hate to do this for nothing then again access is good now with both tanks out. thank you

I checked the old unit resistance and it seemed to settle in the 12-20 range. I think it will be fine once I get a new strainer, float and seal. BTW--The new sending unit I got for the rear tank read 70. I'm in a holding pattern now waiting on the shop that is reworking my old rusty skid plate/support. Still debating on the fuel line change. I think they are ok but I don't like the spot where the line comes up to the fuel pump. It is very close to a header pipe.

update on my project---I was able to locate a sending unit for the midship tank. LMC had one thankfully. I picked up my refurbished midship tank support fromt the fab shop yesterday. They did a really nice job on it. I finally today received the plastic rear tank from JBG. I also had ordered/received a new rear sending unit from JBG. Doggone issue though with the rear stuff from JBG--the tab holes on the sending unit opening in the tank are indexed wrong--closer to 3 & 9 oclock than they should be. I had to use a dremel to cut off one of the sending unit tabs to get it to go in. Then of all things realized the new sending unit pickup tube is too long. I guess I will take a torch and heat it and bend it up a bit to git to fit properly. Does anyone see a problem with doing this? Once I get this sending unit fit in the new rear tank--I'm ready to go on the put-back of everything.
