Who best to inspect my first diesel?

Hello, I'm currently shopping for a 2005 Ford Excursion and wondering if a Ford dealer's service department is the best place I should have the truck inspected before I purchase one from a private seller? Also, are there specific diagnostics I should have run on the engine and transmission to insure I'm buying a good strong and healthy truck? Your feedback very much appreciated...thanks, Graham

where do you live?? the dealership would be a fine place, if they have a good diesel tech. maybe if you post where you live someone can let you know of any good diesel mechanics in the area. the dealership would be able to pull the OASIS report for you so that could be a plus. OASIS=Report Card from Ford, tells you all the warranty work and work done at Ford dealerships.

Thanks Mr. A-Bomb, I live in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. I did speak with a ford service manager yesterday and it seems they can call in a diesel tech to check the engine itself during the inspection. Any idea how well the dealership can diagnose the transmission? I guess I'm super paranoid about buying somebody else's problem. Thanks again! Graham
