C5 transmission rebuild
I am a new user of this site so I hope I am doing this right.
Anyway, I am getting ready to help my son rebuild the transmission in his 1984 Bronco II. It is a 4x4 with the 2.8 and C5 automatic. I am getting ready to order parts and need a new torque converter but have found that the OEM converter is not available anymore and my parts man tells me the replacement converter does not have the lock-up clutch. The question is: if I use the new torque converter do I have to modify the valve body too? Any help from anyone would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Don't toss it yet, you can find a A4ld from a pre 89 B2(single solenoid TCC lockup), that will fit on the 2.8 engine. You will have to change the drive shafts as the A4ld is longer than the C5. The A4ld is not the best tranny but there are more of them around and parts to rebuild are plentyful, plus it is a overdrive tranny too. I have also read elsewere some people have used the dual solenoid tranny and made up a circut to control the TCC and OD solenoids
I rember reading some info about using the C3 in the B2 by using the bellhousing from the C5 tranny, have to dig around for that info.

Ok, I forgot this site: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...AutoTrans.html
In the mid part it will tell you info about the C5 tranny, They also said you can use a C4 torque converter as long as the spline count are the same(input shaft)
Hope this helps

yeah you can use the c5 transmission, just rebuilt it to c4 specs with the right torque converter and call her a day. If you replace the valve body with a c4 valve body it will speed up your shifts as well and make the rebuilt last longer. Many people rebuilt the c5 to a c4 and throw them behind 302 swaps. Its really the only bronco II transmission that with a little work can handle the power of a 302. I had a c-5 in my 84 BII and that thing would never die, leaked a bit but would never die.
