New 49 Ford F1 owner here!

Hello!

I've been the proud owner of a 49 Ford F1 for about a month now. About two PO's ago the engine, transmission, drive shaft, and rear end was swapped out. It now has a 300 straight six from a 73 - 77 Ford truck (at least according to the PO I bought the truck from). The PO I bought the tuck claimed he owned it for aprox. 4 -6 years. He also claimed the rear end was original however after I bought the truck I learned it was not and so far have no idea what it came out of.

The truck runs and drives and that seems to be all the PO cared about, giving little thought about restoring anything and if anything needed to be fixed it was done so as cheaply and as "jerry rigged" as possible.

Despite its neglect the truck seems to be in fair shape and with some time, effort, and money will polish up nicely. ( I will need to replace the tailgate, front bumper, floor of the bed, and possibly both front fenders - drivers side for sure.)

Anyways....I've been looking online for parts and getting an idea of prices. I've found websites such as Mac's and LMC and have found a lot of needed parts listed there but I'm unable to find a drivers side door latch.

Can anyone here point me to a website that has door latches for sale?

Thanks much!

Scott

Welcome aboard Scott, I don't know much about the 49s I'm into the 53-56 but someone will be along later, in the mean time you can check the classifieds and on flee-bay you might find something there. Get some pictures up

Welcome to the board!

Ah yes, the PO issues....lol, we've all got 'em.

I strongly suggest ordering any free catalog you can get. They are a great source of info, pics, and parts diagrams. I'm not sure which vendor carries the door mechanism but one of them is bound to. Here is a list of links that I've found useful over the years;

Thanks Jaye!

I've looked on Flee-bay and saw one listed but was looking more for a new re-manufactured one if they are available. I've found new complete beds, frames fenders and thought surly there is a new door latch for sale by some company somewhere, but I've not been able to find it.

Congratulations on obtaining the most handsome Bonus Built model

I think 48-52 Latches are not generally offered but I could be wrong. I'd give Hemmings a try. If you obtain a Ford Part Number you might find one. Maybe even NOS.

Unless it's missing, I've had pretty good luck repairing them depending on what's worn or broken.

Good Luck

Wow.....what a list Bobby, thanks!!

Yeah the PO claimed he owned the truck for six years and it was running when he bought it and he has driven it back and forth to the local coffee shop for the past 6 years. The following day he said he owned it for the past 4 years. When we came to a deal and I bought the truck and drove it back to my house I looked over the title and noticed that the title date was only about 6 months ago - so either he sat on the title for 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 years before getting tags and re-titling the truck in his name or he lied about how long hes had the truck.

This has me questioning everything else he told me about the truck. Not that its that important...I would have bought the truck regardless. I just wanted some history (accurate history that is) on the truck.

He also told me he bought the truck to drive in the local parade each year but his grandchildren was too embarrassed to ride in it. My kids and their friends, however LOVE the truck even as it is.

I'll try to get some pics up this evening.

LOL...

Yup, you can't put too much stock into what some PO's tell you. The guy I got my truck from, got it from some old rancher who drove it into town to go to the bar every day or two. From the looks of the front clip he had a hard time getting home now and again. There was no title to it and I'm not sure the truck had seen a paved road in decades.

I can't wait to see the pics, especially since 49's are the purtiest of the group (no matter what those 51/52 guys try to say....lol).

The 300 six is a great engine, especially if its coupled to a truck 4 speed. What are your plans for the truck? by the book restoration? full blown darkside custom? something else somewhere in between? Whichever way you go with it this site and the people here are a great source of info, help, encouragment, teasing, sarcasm, etc

Have fun
Bobby

Thanks Eman!

When I bought the truck you could only open the drivers door from the inside. I took the door latch off and took it apart and found where the problem was. When you turn the outside handle there are two pieces of metal that push against each other and instead was sliding past each other. I bent one slightly so it would match up with the other piece of metal and put it back together. When I took it apart I broke 2 of the metal ears that hold it together and had to spot weld it back together.

It worked just like a new door latch for about 3 weeks - - then yesterday it began messing up again so I thought maybe it was time to replace the whole latch.

E-dawg,

I'll be trying my hand at fixing them pretty soon. My dad recently bought one of the lesser attractive bucktoothed trucks (1952) and is having door mechanism problems.
Dang, I don't have time for my truck and now I'll have to try and fix his....lol

To be honest I've not made up my mind. When I 1st got the truck my 1st thought was to find another flathead V8 and restore it back original. Since then I've had several people give me a lot of ideas and I've seen pics and read where others have went and put mustang II front ends with disk breaks, automatic transmissions, power steering, A/C, etc..

I really like the "feel" of the old truck when I'm driving it. I'm 38 years old so I'm old enough to like the old feel and look, but yet still young enough to like the "hot rod" feel and look too.

My wife wants me to put power steering, disk/power breaks, and a automatic transmission in it. She says when I get old and feeble I would be glad I did, but I'm no dummy either....she has a point but I also know she can't drive a standard nor would she like the manual breaks and steering. If I did as she suggested she would drive it too and I don't really want that.

If I did that though it would be nice to have a 289 with a slight cam in it to sound good......ugggh, I just don't know yet.

LOL

My suggestion is to make it safe to drive and then drive it for awhile whil eyou consider the options. It will tell you what it wants to be. And, you will have the added benefit of having some good memories in the truck to carry you through those ineveitable times when you fall into a slump, motivation is gone, truck is in a thousand pieces, and there is no end in sight.

Run some duals off of your 300, you'd be surprised at how good it will sound. They make good power and I think there is a pretty good selection of aftermarket speed parts for them.

Adding power steering, brakes, etc is fairly easy on these trucks and there is good info all over this site. When you are ready to look into it just ask a question and you'll get tons of info. I opted for power steering and brakes just because I stuffed 500ci of Cadillac power under the hood and figured I'd better be able to stop the danged thing (lessons learned from my teenage years when I didn't care about braking). I kept the original suspension and just freshened it up a bit. I wasn't trying to put together a sports car or something that would handle like it was on rails. I wanted something I could drive around town and smoke the heck out of the tires every now and again...and I can definately do that.

The truck is yours, the only person you need to please is yourself, well ok, maybe the little woman 'cause she controls the checkbook.

Welcome aboard Samrat, if you can't find the latch from that list that Bobby sent you, you'll have to tie a rope around the door to keep it shut. Wow Bobby--I have a few6 catalogs and I didn't know all those folks were out there with parts. Will have to get busy and order more books myself. Good luck on the '49 I have one myself and a '48 as you can see. No real PO headaches to mention they just added those "stylish" lights on top of the fenders.
