Its the switch or the wires to the switch..
removing the upper steering wheel cover, unplugging the plug and jumpering across lights the light on the dash.. assume this will do the right thing at the computer too.
now to find the break.. but it looks like you have to pull the steering wheel to get to one tiny bolt holding the rubber boot cage. it would seem that the break should be outboard of the column itself as nothing can really move inside the column..
we'll see

thanks to another post on an older truck concerning the wires, I pulled the shift lever this made it SO much easier to work on.. steps
1. removed top of column shroud (clips hold the two pieces together),
1a I also removed the 3 bolts holding the bottom piece to the column. to remove it completely you have to remove the one screw holding the adjuster arm to the column too.
2. removed 2 screws holding the column boot to housing
3. unhooked wire harness (tested for continuity to button, no good)
4. removed 1 star headed bolt holding stalk to
4a go to the shop with stalk in hand
5. the button is just sitting in the stalk, used a jewelers screwdriver to pry it out, and the wires slide up from the bottom..
6. cut the heat shrink off the wire bundle.
7. traced the failing wire,
8. used some very small bell wire, pushed it thru the bottom hole in the stalk up to the button end..
9. cut the bad wire, solder and some heat shrink..
10. same on the bottom end...
11. slid the botton back in the stalk, pulling the wires out the bottom,
12. used some electrical tape as shield on the remaining wire bundle
13. re-installed, stalk, connect harness. test (ignition on)
14. re-installed the top of the column shroud
