Need help 1966 240 45000 miles

I came across 1966 240 out of a car has everything on it from the transmission to the carb. Was told it was replaced with a big block V8 At 45000 thousand miles.

Can I get a accurate compression reading from it sitting on a pallet?

What would be good compression range?

Thank you

Vincent

There is a lot of missing info, how long has it set,was oil put in the cylinders, does it have ancient oil in it,was it in the weather? You would be checking it at a very poor time because you don't know what is on the cylinder walls or on the valves and seats. If you do,pull all the spark plugs and make sure it has oil and wire the throttle plates open.If nobody put oil in the cylinders and you get maybe 90 or 100 and they are all pretty equal,my guess is that would be good, considering, but if you get a low cylinder,is it a bad valve or an old mouse nest under an exhaust valve?I would drop it in something and get it running, then check things out.It doesn't take long to hook up an older points engine just to run it,and after you burn the cobbwebbs out of it and every thing settles in a little, you can see what you really have, including oil pressure.

Maybe i will just do a recon friday and find out more info on it.

Could one clear the cylinders with the plugs all out and spinning it over.

Then do a compression check, or are you saying it needs to be heated up to clear it out.

He wants 250.00 for it.

Thanks vincent

You may be able to.Make sure it has oil in it,this will also refresh the coating on the bearings at a low rpm.You may also be able to take a small, bright flash light and see a little of the valve edges thru the plug holes. It's worth a try,but if you get a bad reading on a cylinder, don't pronounce it dead,it will just take more investigating.

I went out to check the engine out it is a 300 6 1975 model.

Pulled the plugs and verified the stroke. 4 inch

Had been sitting a year.

It turned over by hand with plugs out.

Has oil in it.

He put oil in the cylinders before it sat up.

It sat in his garage covered up the hole time.

He thought it was a 240.

The starter was dragging so could not do a compression test.

I told him was not sure about buying it.

He said make offer, gave him 100.00 and left with it.

I was thinking $250 was a little high for a mystery motor. $100 is a good deal though, even if you end up having to freshen it up.

Hey,if that motor has 45k on it and the trans and you turned it by hand with out plugs, you probably stole it! If the guy put oil in the cylinders,it must have been worth it for him to take time to do it.A good tip is to use 2-stroke oil because it will burn out without fouling your plugs(just in case you ever have to do it).For $100 you can afford to check things out good.Don't forget about those rusty oil pans, it's killer if you have to replace it in the truck.Have fun with your new toy!

In all likelihood this is a good engine and worth $100 even if it turns out in need of a rebuild. These engines are so easy and cheap to rebuild, I don't understand how you can go wrong. It's scrap iron price these days makes it worth a good bit of the hundred bucks.
