Royal Purple: Fact or Fiction?

I've heard from multiple sources that royal purple is the supreme motor oil. So supreme, in fact, that people say it actually ADDS hp to one's engine. I've never used it myself...i've always used either mobile 1 or castrol. The dealership put quaker state in my engine and though i've never heard bad things about it, i'm not sure i want it in my truck. My oil change is coming up and i'm wondering...is royal purple worth the money?

Never heard of it. Not sure how it could ad horsepower though. Sounds too good to be true

I've used royal purple in a Jeep Cherokee I had before my '03 SD. It is a very good oil and I could run longer service intervals on it and only change the filter. I haven't ran it in my SD due to the cost of the oil. The last time I checked at O'Reilly Auto Parts, it was around $7.29 per quart.

im not a fan of royal purple, i been drag racing for years and been around of lot of people and heard lots of different things, but one thing i was told right from one of the top engine builders when i asked the same question about whats the best oil, is that royal purple in fact does make more horsepower but they sacrifice the life of the motor to make that horsepower, it doesnt have alot of the key ingredients in it that make an engine last. alot of guys do use it in the racing world yes, but most of them dont put 100,000 or even 50,000 miles on that engine. its just not worth the 5 or 10 hp that you gain from it let alone the price you pay.there are plenty of other proficient oils out there that will suffice. thanks to the EPA they've taken all the good stuff (zinc, phosforous, good detergents) out of modern motor oil for better emmisions. now alot of racing oil (bradpenn, joe gibbs) have that stuff in it, but really its not legal for on highway vehicles. i run brad penn in my race engines, and everytime i tear that motor down, it looks brand new inside. but as for a daily driver or the trucks that we have, there are plenty of good oils out there, the important thing is that your using a oil that meets manufacturer specs and that its changed regularly.

ive always felt that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. or theres a downfall or catch somewhere along the line.

JUST MY .02 CENTS... for what its worth

I've never used Royal Purple, but I have no problem with some oil "increasing" horsepower in modest amounts. After all, hp is measured on the a$$ end of the motor, and there's a lot of parts that can detract from hp by generating friction and dissipating heat. So if an oil is better than what the manufacturer used to established the motor's ratings, then it will naturally "add" horsepower.

How about Royal Purple gear oil? I was under the impression that there was none better for LS differentials. Did I waste my money?

I have used AMSOIL, Mobil 1, and Royal Purple.

When I switched to synthetic the first winter I owned my truck I used AMSOIL. I liked the AMSOIL but I am not impressed with the fact that I can't just go to a store and buy it locally. I have to order it from an individual sales representative.

Since that time I have used Mobil 1 full synthetic. I like this oil and the fact that I can get it just about anywhere and some places offer "oil change special" which is 5 quarts of it and a Mobil 1 filter for 30 dollars. I seem to use about a quart to a quart and a half in about 6000 miles.

I used Royal Purple once. I was not very satisfied with it because I used about 3 quarts in 5000 miles and its priced about a dollar higher per quart than Mobil 1.

yes i agree 100% with using better oil as long as its not negatively affecting the life of the engine. and by no means am i an expert but i think royal purple concentrates to much on making horsepower and not enough on quality. i have nothing against guys using it in race engines, because alot of those engines get rebuilt relatively often. but i wouldnt reccomend it at all in any application because in my opinion it could mean the difference between damage or a part failure. any little thing i can do to make an engine last longer im gonna try to do just that. so what if it makes 5 or 10 more hp. youll never notice it anyways unless your looking to gain a few hundreds of a second in e.t.

Mobil synthetic products are the way to go. I've proven this over the past 15 years and using the full synthetic in 4 new Fords and changing the oil in 12000 mile intervals with a MC filter change at 6k.

A lot of it is how much hype the oil dealer wants to put out there. The best thing to go by is how big is the company and how long has the product been out there. You have to prove yourself! Mobil 1 has been around for a while with no bad marks I know of. Royal purple has tons of hype and it all just becomes one big blur after a while. It's kind of like;
