Superduty specifications, 1999 - 2011

I compiled a list of these, and I haven't seen them in one place here at FTE, so here they are. These are intended for Body Builders, but they are excellent specification pages for us as well.

Just click on the model year, and then choose the specification you want. Different years include different levels of info, but the Superduty is included in all of them. The 2010 apparently isn't out yet. There is nothing secret here, it's all available on the fleet.ford web site.

Electrical Connections
Installation of any inductive load devices (i.e., electric motors, electric clutches for clutch pumps, etc.) MUST NOT be connected to OEM wiring or fuse panels. Power for such devices should be taken directly from the battery or starter motor relay power
terminal. Control of these devices should be achieved via relays. No direct current path should exist between OEM wiring and the installed load that is not filtered by the battery. These recommendations are intended to reduce or eliminate any induced
reverse voltage into the OEM circuitry.
Does this include the Upfitter switches? That seems odd.

I ask because I'm thinking about a 12v OBA system.

I'm sure it does include the upfitters. Relays have to be specially constructed and rated for induction loads, especially for motors. Normal relays will arc during opening and closing cycles, and burn the surfaces of the contacts. You might be okay if the induction load is very low compared to the relay rating, but it's best to turn motors on and off with relays designed for induction loads. Heaters, like glow plugs, are also induction loads.

I don't know what the common practice is on wiring on board air compressors. I'm just explaining the theory behind the Ford warning.

I understand the difference in the loads...

In fact the compressor relay on my travel trailer's A/C just welded itself shut a few weeks ago because it was designed incorrectly.

If the upfitter switches were truely not made to take an inductive load, it seems that their function suddenly gets limited to lights or opening a second relay. Winches, compressors, hydraulic pumps...all inductive.

It may interest some to note the 2005 link in the first post. It includes a link to a PDF which lists specifications for all the truck/SUV engines that year. It includes the hybrid and regular 4 cyl, 4 different 6 cylinder engines, the V-8 and V-10 in both 2 valve and 3 valve versions, and the 6.0 diesel. All together it is an interesting comparison between all the engine offerings for that year.

I took the liberty to copy-and-paste your links into a post in Tech Folder sticky at the top of this forum, complete with a link to this thread.

Oh, and reps for your original post in this thread! GREAT research
