I am running nearly 16. I will be adding a mallory unit next week in my 360. I will keep in touch as to what I come up with. At 6 deg my 360 could'nt cross the street. At 12 to 16 it has power. I just took it out on a hundred mile run today and it ran awesome even in hilly country and almost 100 deg heat. I am going to check my total advance tomorrow.
It confuses me some too but look at this.

Initial timing is a meaningles number, unless you know what your total advance is.

Look here for instructions on finding your total maximum mechanical advance.

Thanks Bear. That is the same link I posted. My thread was on the same subject so I will just follow this one. One question I asked that didn't get answered is you said to "Keep it safe" Keep it safe from what? What kind of damage are we talking about here. I want to understand whats going on in there. None the less I am going to follow your advice.

Formula,
Measured Gross Advance - Initial Advance = Net Measured Advance. (+ or - timing) for Total Desired Advance of 36. (For a street machine that works once in a while.)

I still don't fully understand the concept so I will be "puttin my siferin" cap on until I get it.

The damage is caused by firing off the mixture before it needs to be, there by resisting the movement of the piston up toward TDC on the compression stroke. This creates massive amounts of heat and pressure which can and will hammer a hole in your piston top along with beating your bearings flat. There by ruining your engine. To much timing is never good thing and Ford has always recommended no more than 38° maximum mechanical advance in the FE motors.

To tell the truth I have run as much as 44° total advance, BUT this was under a specific set of circumstances in a racing situation and I never did it on a street motor.
