i know 97-99 are 5.4 with the non pi heads(235hp) , some 99.5 up to 04 5.4 v8 are pi which is 20 hp more (260 hp ) check your cylinder head on the casting number it should said pi , if not you have a early version of the 99 5.4v8 which is what i have on my 99 f250 and it sucks because it got no power ...
i know you can swap from 97 up to 04 excluding 00 up navigators 5.4 , iam in the same chapter as you i need a 5.4 you can basically use one from any f150 97-04 , e250,350, as long as its from 97-04

97-98 in the F150 are non-PI
97-99 in the SD are non-PI
The Navigator engine used a 4V head and would take a lot of modification to install.
I would go with the PI engine from a 2000-04 SD.
Look for the PI on the head like in this picture https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...137666&width=2

The PI heads can be identified as shown in these photos:
Those marks can typically be found near the front of the head on the exhaust side---most times you'll have to crawl under the vehicle and look upward or use an inspection mirror or borescope-type viewer.
