Selling an '01 Escape that has been GREAT for my daughter to drive. Bought her a new 2010 Escape as she is graduation High School in a couple of months.

Bought my older daughter an '05 Escape when she graduated HS. Now has 60,000 miles and raising two kids and a husband...the little truck has held up very well even with poor maintenance.

I always highly recommend them.

Found it

I found some other people with front in problems with their escapes and their fixes were sway bars. When my husband saw the difference in stock versus after market he ordered some for mine and will change them out. Hopefully that will fix the problem. It is aggravating to me that the dealership lied when I bought it but water under the bridge and they are out of business so......I will let you all know how it works.

2010 Escape

I bought my wife a 2010 Escape XLT one about 3 months ago and she loves it. The 09 redesign transformed this vehicle. We went with the 3.0l Duratec Flex fuel V6 rated at 240HP, mated to a 6 speed automatic. This thing is quick. They redesigned the suspension, brakes, and steering. We like the way it handles and the overall ride. It has 2 gyroscopes that control the anti-roll with stability control system. No other SUV sold in the US has this feature.

The engine has too many changes to even mention but 240HP out of a 3.0l speaks for itself. We got the sync system by Microsoft. It's a must have item and it isn't standard. Add superb safety features and a pretty cool rugged look and I think the vehicle is a winner.

wptski, Are you able to provide a list of the TSB's for the '09 Escapes? I did a quick search here (2009 FORD ESCAPE TSB's (technical service bulletins)) And the one you mention above does not appear. As well, i noticed someone else further along on this thread

Any possibility of providing such a list?

Maybe they forgot to RESET the oil change? Check your owner's manual on how to RESET it.

Ford Escape Air Conditioning Toxicity Problem

I'm not a mechanic, or even close to being one. I bought a 2009 Ford Escape brand new from my local Ford dealer (Holiday Ford, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada), and always had it serviced there. From the end of the second year I started having air conditioning problems (a/c blowing hot). The dealer 'repaired' it and charged me for it, three times over the course of fourteen months. I had to store the vehicle for six months, and then, when it started again, guess what? So back to the dealer we go! (A 40 mile journey...each way!) Now they tell me that there is "a bag of chemicals in the air conditioning system which has degraded...when this happens the chemicals blow throughout the system, damaging everything...the entire a/c system will need to be replaced". Interestingly, Ford put out a service bulletin to the dealers three years ago about this problem. I have a couple of concerns here. The first is that if these chemicals are damaging the air conditioning system to that extent, what have they done to the health of my family and myself? Secondly, I asked the dealer to go back to Ford and get authorization to repair this under the warranty extension...from that point forward, the Service Department got difficult to get through to. I had made the point that they had attempted to repair, and charged me for those 'repairs' on three separate occasions before the vehicle went out of the warranty and the warranty extension, and it wasn't until AFTER that, that they decided that this repair was the "REAL" problem. Several calls were not taken, and messages were not returned over a two week period. There is NO QUESTION that they were avoiding me and hoping that I would go away. Finally, I drove back to the dealership (yeah...ANOTHER 40 miles each way). When I tracked down the service advisor whom I had been dealing with, he said that there was nothing that they could do to help me, because the vehicle was now out of warranty, and that the repair was going to cost $2,100! I called Ford Customer Care, and got the usual scripted runaround, and no help whatsoever! Now I will take the vehicle to a mechanic whom I trust (what choice do I have, really?) and I guess we'll see what he thinks is wrong and what it will cost to fix!!! If you have an a/c problem with an Escape (or for that matter ANY Ford) take it right back to the dealer and DEMAND that they check this chemical pack! At least that way, you'll get their incredibly poor and unsafe design fixed before the car is out of warranty, because they clearly have no intention of issuing a recall or fixing the problem any other way! And if you were considering purchasing a Ford, I would bear my awful lesson here in mind. By the way, I have all of the vehicle's service records and repair documentation to substantiate everything that I've said here, about both the vehicle and my treatment by the Dealer.

I can remember a time when Ford used to publicly that "Quality is Job 1!" These days, I'm pretty convinced that poor design, dealer honesty and incompetence, and utter indifference to the customer are competing for first place, and I'm really not sure which one is winning.

wow, talk about digging one up from the past. how surprised was I when I got a post notification email for this conversation.

I just read my OP and it was nearly 100k ago. Yep, I'm at 219,000 miles in my '02 now and the only thing I've replaced is the lower Cat.

I do have a small oil leak now coming from somewhere, not exactly sure. I'm not really inclined to do anything about it.

The car still pulls strong going up hills, I easily pass people. On the hwy I get about 24mpg, which is a few miles less than when new. My commute is mixed and I get around 19mpg.

Easily the best car I've ever owned, and I've had a few over my driving years.

Agree about ancient.

Our '03 V6 was traded for a '12 Fusion at just under 100,000 miles, but at that, possibly one of the best cars we have owned. NOTHING went wrong with it except a $30 idle valve and the front sway bar links. It had one brake job and 2 sets of tires, oil changes 2x or more a year. It had a couple strange but only occasional squeaks that started about Day 30 and were still there 9 years later. We should have kept the car as my 18/20 mpg DD vs the 9/10 mpg F350 V10 but for space considerations, didn't

I had an old Chevy Blazer and the AC stopped working. I was the dryer which is like the stuff in little bags that you might find with electronic items. They replaced the dryer, vacuumed the system or pumped it down, refilled and away I went. A few days later after some use the cold air became warm. It would start out great then go bad after a bit.

Back to the gas station I went. Seems that the stuff had plugged up the expansion valve which had what looked like an old carb sintered bronze filter. After that, it worked great till it was stolen years later.

It is a closed system so even if the bag breaks it stays inside and does affect or get into the cabin air. No hazard at all.

I have the 08 & 09 3.0 Duratec-
please explain "the 09 redesign transformed"
aside from the 6 speed shifting more, a bit more cruising HP and Torque,
both get the same gas mileage if driven correctly, handle exactly the same on & off road, and valve lift and duration along with a more aggressive computer tune, is pretty much not "too many changes"
LIMHO

PS- my older sister bought the Escape 01, V6, 4WD, brand new- she loves it and won't part with it- she doesn't let others drive it- you don't suppose one person putting on all the miles, expecting it to last, has anything to do with a nice vehicle staying nice- N Michigan
we dive our Escapes easy- they aren't meant to be off road beasts
My 2 have been trouble free, plain and simple- course being a past mechanic I know how to care for a vehicle and drive it right

Here are thoughts on my '09 Escape, XLT, V6, 4WD

Traded my '02 Explorer XLS 4WD for the Escape in July, mainly since '09 was the first year the Escape could be flat towed behind our motorhome (as we did the Explorer)

Well, Ford didn't really do their homework with the new tranny, and multiple forums are reporting multiple tranny failures. Ford is replacing them and has come up with a "fix" though dropping the fluid level to the minimum level on the stick doesnt really qualify IMO. We havent towed yet, but will this spring.

The Good:
Very comfy interior (I opted for the leather), nice electronics, SYNC is cool, works my phone and iPod. Opted for the Audiophile stereo and it does crank out good, CDs and SAT sound perfect. Handled nicely in the 2ft snowstorm we saw a few weeks back. V6 has plenty of power and tows my 10' enclosed trailer nicely. Happy with the mpg so far (~22) Styling is great, though I will add body side mouldings. Really like the color - Pearl Slate Metallic.

The Not-So-Good:
Obvious tranny issues (hoping for the best) Ride is a little clunky in the rear, not sure exactly what it is. Doesnt take much of a bump in the road to have it act harshly and thump. Sounds like something is banging around in the wet storage well under the rear carpet - but there isnt. TPMS didn't alert me to the fact that my tires were 11 psi low ? Never had one before, and I guess I cant trust it, so back to the weekly checks. Already had to replace the blower motor as it was noisy at low speed. Also had a few TSBs done at the dealership for tranny shift points and and another for a n accelerator surge when cold.

So on the whole, I like the Escape much better than the Explorer. It rides better, even with the clunky thumpy issue, but maybe thats just me being to critical, as my wife says
interesting read
could you explain about that flat towing Ford says the 2009 V6, auto, 4WD, is capable of

curious- have you pulled that rear carpet out, the support, and the left side panel out- "wet storage area" that's a new one to me

Talking 2006 Ford Escape XLT 3.0L V6

One of the best, if not the best auto I've ever owned. Yes, the seats are stained (the least of my worries), the sunroof leaks off and on, and there is dry rot on the windshield cowling, BUT...the only things I've ever done to it are the brakes, air filters, oil changes, and transmission maintenance, and it's still running great with approx. 155K miles on it. Mileage is still good (25 in city, 29-30 in country), and I would definitely buy another but want to enjoy the "paid for" status just a bit longer. Only other complaint would be the road noise, but a great ride overall. Thank you Ford!
