That's what I thought.....

With the internally regulated 2G alternator all you need to use is the light green/red wire from your old harness.
You will need a chunk of harness from the 3G donor and a 175A fuse, or you can buy a harness kit as pictured in post 41.

I just scored a 3G from the Junkyard for 20 bucks. Clipped out the harness and 4 gauge charging wire to go with it. Chaching! it was 1/2 off day at the pick-a-part. It would have been cheaper than 20, but he charged me for the wiring harness. Oh, and i took it out of a Ford Windstar. It appears as if the van went to the junkyard right after a brand new autozone alternator was installed. It still has the sticker with the numbers on it, i wonder if i can obtain the warranty for it. Baller on a Dollar!

Just to be clear.

I've upgraded to an alternator from a 1994 F150 from my 1G externally regulated unit and frigged up wiring. Is that 3G?

Do I still need the 175 amp fuse if i'm using the wiring harness from the 1994 from alternator to solenoid?

Yes, that is a 3G alternator. To be on the safe side, I'd run a fuse, as long as the factory harness does not have a fusable link.

I've got a fuseable link going to the rest of the truck but not from the alternator to the solenoid so I'll get the fuse. Thanks!

3G Alternator Install

Sorry for the stupid question. I am doing the 3G upgrade to my 86 F350 460 4 Barrel Holly. Am I correct in thinking I can operate the stock choke 7-8 volts off of the "S" term. white/blk. term of the alt. Thanks for your help Rodger

This is a great thread. Currently my 86 4.9L looks like it has a 2G. Not sure of amperage, but HAS to be low as this thing has headlights and heat and thats it!!

So are all of the 130A 3G's the bigger 8.25" case? I want to add electric fans and start wiring this thing on relays. Headlights etc.. Plus have room left over on alternator. The 130A sounds like it is for me.

Is there a direct bolt in 130A 3G?

Thanks!

Dave

Dave,
The 2G is only about 60-65A

You are a little confused.
The 3G comes in two case diameters, 135mm (95A, 4 hole) and 148mm (130A, 2 hole)

Both sizes come in a few mounting styles.
7" C-C pivot (3.0V-6)
8.25" C-C pivot (3.8V-6)
Side mount
Odd front 'V' mount. (for Mod motors I think)

I made the mistake before -but now know- that the 4.9 mount takes the 8.25" C-C spacing.
Look for one from a '90-'93 3.8l V6 Taurus/Sable.

You will need:
A new charge cable with 175A fuse inline
To tap the adjuster ear of your new alternator to 3/8-16
To modify your current regulator plug as shown at the bottom of post #41
Change over to your current V-belt pulley. (add a shim washer so it doesn't rub the case)

Ah yes, I thought that the 4.9 had the 7". Thanks!!! I will try and find a 8.25" for cheap. I am in no rush as the "Fire" alternator still works. I do like the "Ryan" install. I looked, and maybe I passed it, do they sell that as a Kit?

It seems RJM Injection Technologies (Ryan McCormack's web store) had some fulfillment issues and has now vanished from the web.
There are threads about this...

His products were well thought out and high quality from my experience.

I have a DB PMGR starter in my truck.
Chinese yes, but it is doing the job.
Their feedback rating is very good.

My 3G was a Motorcraft branded rebuild from old stock (if the box is any indication)

Found both on Ebay.
