Aftermarket Exhaust Manifold for 7.3L Turbo?

Hey Folks – Nice site.
I have a 1996 F250 7.3L Turbo Powerstroke in need of new exhaust manifolds. OEM from Ford they’re $350-$400 each. Dorman sells them through distributors for about $160. I’m assuming these are some Chinese imports – but has anyone had a bad experience using Dorman (or other aftermarket manifolds) on the 7.3L? I was ready to go OEM but for the price difference I have to give aftermarket a look.
Thanks!

The local dealer said they’re warped & I can hear the exhaust leak on both sides of the engine compartment. They said they usually only see it on trucks from snow country – which is where this one spent most of it’s life. I also know the original owner & have know the truck since it was new. The guy loved to keep the engine compartment clean – by taking it to the car wash, opening the hood & blasting away. Probably not a good thing to do.
I’m going to take it to another shop for a second opinion since this is not something I’m looking forward to doing myself.
I’m leery of bone-yard parts on an application like this. I’d rather go new if the aftermarket manifolds are OK, especially since I’m going to install a new 4” exhaust system as well.

Check to see if all your exhaust manifold bolts are there. I have never seen on e warp with all the bolts in place. And it is not as if you will be anywhere near the manifolds when you are putting on new exhaust

Good point about the bolts. I haven’t given it a close inspection myself. I don’t turn many wrenches or do much under-hood work in the summertime here – i.e. 116’ today.
BTW – those are some nice rigs you have there. The ’96 F350 is ****!

I checked this morning & no bolts are missing. And the more I thought about it, how the hell could the dealer tell if the manifolds are warped without removing them & they’ve never been removed. Had he said they were “cracked” I might go for it. Now I’m wondering if they were just trying to give me a wall-job. A $2,300 wall-job. Guess I’ll crawl around in there myself before I go to another shop.

And if all the bolts are in there the manifolds cant be warped. What kind of exhaust leak do you have?

It’s under the hood. If I stand in front with hood open & rev it up I hear the leak. Sounds about the same on both sides but hard to tell. Don’t really hear it at idle. Under quick acceleration or under load it’s a thrap-thrap-thrap sound about in time with one or two cylinders firing.
I haven’t looked at my EBP but will take a reading tomorrow. Don’t think I’m losing much boost – it runs great but I’ve noticed a slight drop in mileage but that may be due to the excessive heat lately.

Check your up pipes where they meet the collector at the turbo. It will be plainly obvious. there will be sooot at the leak. No soot, no leak.

It’s been a busy week – Nothing at the turbo connection but I’ll be checking manifold/up pipe flanges this weekend.
