just picked up an 87 IDI f250...couple questions

Just picked up a decent shape f250 with the 6.9 diesel motor. It has what I was told to be an old banks intercooled turbo kit on it. It runs and drives fine, however there are a couple problems. The turn signals don't work for starters. I believe the problem isthe switch in the column. Is there a write up on how to remove and replace this switch? What tools do I need to get the wheel off? Thanks for any tips.

just picked up an 87 IDI f250

To this day, I own an 84 F250 with a 6.9 diesel. One of the best trucks I have ever had.

The directional switch did not work on mine either. I discovered without taking the steering wheel or switch out that the ignition switch did not fully return to an on position. Check this. This may be the problem. The way I fixed mine was to gently pull back to the on position and the directional signals worked. May be a simple way to fix your problem.

Hope this helps.

another thing you might want to try is on my old 84, the hazard light button would slowly walk its way out and when it was half out, the turn signals wouldn't work. All I would do was push it in a bit and all was good.

I just fixed my turn signals today on my 88 f250 it was the thermal flasher thats in the fuse box. the big round thing.... if you have a parts store look it up they will tell you they dont have one but they do. any two prong (in my case it was two prong) will work.

another option is that one of the bulbs is blown i had a buddy and his didn't work and to find out it was just one of the bulbs had blown. hopes this helps

I think I figured out the turn signal problem and no brake light problem at the same time...found out the brake light switch runs through the turn signal switch in the column, which is shot. Ill post pics of the turbo setup tomorrow maybe someone will recognize it. Looks lik it was a nice kit for its time.

There is a screw on the dash side of each steering wheel spoke, once these are removed you can pull the steering wheel pad. Then undo the center nut on the steering column. You will now need a steering wheel puller to pull the steering wheel. Now unscrew the turn signal stalk and the three screws holding the turn signal mounting plate. The plate will now come off, however the hard bit is feeding the wiring out.
Also there is a great page here for the pre-power stroke diesels. Go down the main forum page a bit to the diesel section and have a read.
