Well it looks like things are going from bad to worse. We think Donna had a light stroke sometime last week, nothing extreme, but enough to affect her speech and thinking. Then, on Friday night, she slipped into a coma. Hospice nurse told us to gather the family. Donna fooled us though, at around 4AM she looked up and asked to go "potty". Since she has been in and out of consciousness, some good times and some bad. Communication is difficult at best. She seems to be in some pain and has anxiety attacks when she has difficulty breathing. Hospice brought her a hospital bed today to be more comfortable. If things progress at this rate, I think time is getting very near.
I am getting very tired, getting very little sleep. Even when Donna gets to sleep, I don't seem to. I doze off and then wake to listen for her breathing, if I don't hear it immediately, I am instantly wide awake.
I am glad that Donna's daughter, Gina, was able to take time off to stay with us and help take care of her Mother. I really don't know what I would do without her.
After 23 years together, I know I will be lost when she is gone. I know it will be a relief when it is over, knowing she is no longer suffering, but we still feel guilty.
