Differring answers on lower control arms for LD 4x4

I have a 99 F250 light duty 4x4. I have received different answers on replacing the balljoints on the lower control arms. I was all set to replace
the control arm until I spoke to the local ford dealer parts dept. and was
told that for a truck under 8800 lbs. that I could just replace the balljoint
only. $60.00 bucks as compared to $350.00. Is it safe? is it feaseable?
Somone who knows for sure lay some knowledge on me.

your truck like the f150's out there you should only have to replace the lower ball joint itself. the control arms don't need replacing. when replacing the upper ball joint the whole upper control arm needs replacing. it is safe and it is feasable.

Don't wory about the control arm. Just do the ball joints if that is all that is required. Just like Papajoemrt said.

I jsut had to have mine replaced in my F-150, it took the garage 30 mins per side give or take to do it. But keep in mind it is not as simple as the uppers. The steering knuckle has to be seperated, and the axles had to come out to get the press in and out. If you have the tools experiance and willingness to do it then I'd say go for it. For me, I took it to a garage, they hit me at 40.00 per side and I brought in my own parts.

But safe as can be no issues so far.

It's definitely a do-it-yourself job. but if it's your first time and you never taken apart the front knuckle (i was stupid and disconnected the hub assembly from the knuckle, i now know how to replace that) then you'll be in for a treat if you don't have something to follow such as what joe finn up there suggested you take a look at. took me around 12 hours to do it myself, and that included driving to get Moog parts.
