Mobil 1 Stinks!

Well, at least their synthetic transmission fluid does!

Decided that it was time to change the oil in the hydraulic system, even though the pump works just fine with no whining at all. It was looking kinda' brown and it was just time.

So many on here have recommended Mobil 1 ATF, and since I just dumped three and a half quarts of their finest 75W-140 into the differential, I thought I should probably spend some more money with them. Bought four quarts for just over thirty bucks.

After my wife got home tonight (SOMEONE's got to pump the brakes and turn it lock-to-lock), I popped the cap off the first quart. Just for grins I stuck my nose into the cap.

Man, that's a smell I've never encountered before!

Anybody know why it smells so different?

Hadn't really noticed it, Marv. I guess I've been using it for so long now, that it doesn't smell funny to me. LOL

I have a crankcase load of Mobil 1 Delvac 5-40 and don't notice anything either.
I've noticed that a lot of synthetic blends for special applications smell very strongly like fish oil lately.
VW / Audi Tiptronic ATF for instance. Very fishy smell fills the shop as soon as you open the container.

Something to do with the additives is the wide application ATF fluids. Most of them that claim to work in a variety of different transmissions stink. Synthetic or not.

Yes! That's it! Fishy smell is what it is!

Fish-oil ATF.

At least Mobil (and Audi) gives us some way to tell it's synthetic.

Ahhh, for the days of Type F.

And that didn't mean "fishy"......
