Hello everyone im new here. A few years ago i bought a 1948 Ford F1 from my grandfather for $1! It needs a new engine and probablly transmission. THe body is in real good condition and does not have much rust. I would like to get it running before i start working on the body. I want to Hot Rod it but i am wondering which engines can fit. It has the Fladhead 6 right now. But i would rather "upgrade" the engine right away so i dont have to do this later. I just dont know which engines are out there that will fit without having to modify the engine bay. I have tried searching but no luck yet hopefully you guys can help me out.
Depends on how far to the "darkside" you want to go and what you can get your hands on at a reasonable price.
I would stick to the small blocks to make it easier. Several people have used a 302 ford. You can probably find nearly anything if you look hard, but the big blocks like a 460 ford require a little more work. Of course you can go all the way to the far side of "dark" and use a sb c***y.
Im new to all this. I guess since the flathead i have now has a crack on the block i was just thinking of putting something in with more HP. I dont really want to make too many modifications to the firewall or fenders inside. With a smallblock would it fit right in or would i have to make any modifications?

I don't know about anything but mine. It's a SBC and I did not modify the firewall or the inner fenders.
Which one is yours? How many Hp? Did you have to put a new tranny as well?

It's a stock 350 with a 700R4 trans and 9" rear end,
Had to mount the engine 1" off center to get clearance for the Toyota steering box.
Runs and drives great.

That looks nice thats the look im going for. If you dont mind me asking what did the engine and tran run you?
I would lean more toward the period correct 8BA flathead V-8.
Won't be the fastest,
Won't be the cheapest,
But it will fit in there like a glove and when yer uncle Joe looks under the open hood, he'll say, "Man, I remember these"...slim

Can't help you with the cost. I had part of it and then traded some stuff for more parts.
I did have a trans shop go through the 700R4. Cost me $325. Completely rebuilt the engine,
bored .030 over, polished crank, did the valves and put roller rockers on, new push rods, roller timing chain, new oil pump, new distributor, and who knows what else. Don't have a cost for engine since I did most of it myself.
How about something really different? Like a 2.3 turbo and 5 speed from an 84 to 86 T Bird Turbo Coupe?. Should fit, will be lighter, can be economical to run with good performance when needed. Will definitely draw attention.
