my question is...what muffler is out there that is loud, mellow, and has a deep tone? i want to actually hear the exhaust in the cab when it is idleing. im thinking of the super 44? but all suggestions appreciated!!
I would look into a set of hedman headers if you are thinking of going this route. I think either Andym or Silverstreak adapted them for use on his 300. He had to grind his Alt bracket some to get them to fit, but he stated it was a noticable difference. And I think that setup you looked at is rather nice @ Summit. Maybe a Series 40 flowmaster for the muffler? I have heard a lot of folks on here have them for the 300's
one problem with the header where are the two upstream o2 sensors gonna go there right in the manafolds and the down stream is located between pre cat and after cat since im 99.9% sure this is a three bank system unlike the speed density system that only has one upstream that could be relocated easly with this setup
nw i looked at the magnaflow cat pray to god that your cat aint bad cause well sorry for the bad news thats a direct replacement for a truck with speed density cause it has a outlet for the only oxygen sensor found on it and thats upstream yours lies between the pre cat and after cat on the top side across from your tranny and the other two not a problem are in your manafolds. unless you can find a dumbey sensor for the cat or can build one (let me know if you can tryin to fix dads '96) you could just eliminate the cat unless if you have emmisoin law in which you could use the one from summit otherwiss you have to go with the factory cats that are now dont have a heart attak just short of $500 and thats not at the dealer, sorry for the long reply and bad news

lol sorry but i truely didnt get a thing you said.. yes the two o2 sensors by the engine just stay at the manifolds, and then the last one is by the tranny..so what is wrong with it again?

yea the 40 might not be bad..but i read up the descriptions for the 40 and super 44.. the 40 was loud on the outside only and the 44 was supposed to be loud inside and out so ill take both in to consideration ater i make up my mind ha
Iowan was right about the '96, MAF setup. I'm still learning, but it may be difficult or impossible for a set of hedman headers for your app.
If you do go with the Super 44, let me know, as I'm getting closer to building my exhaust system, when the money allows it. I'm gonna try what one of the others have tried and go with headers(adapted) and a new exhaust all the way down to just before the pass. rear tire.
NW if you look closely to where the magnaflow cat turns into a dual to single theres that hole for your o2 sensor its in the wrong spot. See when you talk about o2 sensors theres two types upstream found before the cat and down stream found after the cat. The 96 (your truck) and if im not mistaken some of the 95s that are california trucks have a OBDII computer which is a very and i do say very touchey with what you do to it. See your truck since it has that computer has what you call a three bank sytem which means you have three o2 sensors two before the cat to (sommbody correct me if im wrong) see how rich or lean your running the one after the pre cat located by the tranny detects weather or not the cat is working corectly. Thats why if you instal the magnaflow it will through a code saying that your cat is bad due to the hole for the third o2 sensor is upstream instead of down stream. I hope i didnt confuse you even more.
a loud muffler...try a blue bottle...makes my dads 302 sound like a harley davidson bike...and im not exaggerating...if i remember i will get sound clips next time im out there, its been sitting an i want to buy it off him and fix some stuff on it to replace the ole 91 of mine (my dads 92 with the blue bottles is an ext. cab haha same truck otherwise)
I tried running a flowmaster 40 on my 300 and it drove me beserk. It didn't have a presence at idle, droned on cruise, and was raspy at WOT. It was everything I didn't want in a muffler.
Ran a glasspack and it wasn't bad until the packing blew out, and then it was just loud all the time.
Finally decided, "Forget it, time for a quiet truck," and walked into the local discount parts house. Asked for a 2.25" oval case turbo muffler with a centered inlet and an offset outlet- cost all of $19.00.
I have the stock log exhaust, so I have a single 2" pipe down to right at the back of the cab (supercab shortbed, muffler is even with the front of the saddle tank). There it steps up to the 2.25 muffler and a full length tailpipe.
In the cab at idle I can't hear it per se, but i can feel it; it has a good bass to it. Outside the truck it has a nice rumble on the exhaust side but isn't so loud that everyone turns around when I start it. At WOT it isn't raspy or excessively loud ut everyone knows it when you lay into it and on the highway it's quiet enough to be a DD without hesitation.
But if all you want is noise in the cab, lop the tailpipe off at the end of the muffler. That's free.
I say just run a short glasspack. I like it loud and aggresive as long as it's not bad in the cab. The key to this is to run full length tailpipes.
Edit; I cut the muffler off my truck while maintaining both factory cats. Wasn't a bad sound either, and it's super cheap (a length of pipe and turndown is all you'll need).

That was my favorite setup on my reg cab long bed 85. ran the factory cats, no muffler, and a full length exhaust. Then the cats clogged and I wasn't willing to spend that much- hence why i've been through about 6 exhaust setups in the last 3 years looking for one I liked.

You ran a tailpipe? I did that one time too with no muffler. What did you think your truck sounded like? Dumped under my truck I thought it sounded just like a tractor.
