Mercon V Mercon III compatibility / exactly what are differences?

Just need some input on exactly what are the differences on mercon V
versus mercon III or other dexron approved ATF.
Can a older transmission be completely flushed and updated to Mercon V ?? would additives be needed ??
I have heard conflicting stories on this subject.

You should not use MERCON V in a transmission that requires MERCON. Thos two fluids should not be mixed, either.

Always use the recommended fluid. There is no benifit from using MERCON V in an older transmission that requires MERCON.

If your reason for asking about MERCON V is because of synthetics, MERCON V is not necessarily synthetic. Some are, some are not. There are synthetic MERCON V and MERCON fluids on the market.

I bought my 1992 Aerostar 3.0 with 129k and black transmission fluid. I flushed and filled with Mercon V. (I later found out that Ford says Mercon V should not be used in the 1992). There was a great improvement in shift quality. Drove over 100k using Mercon V with no problems whatsoever. I recently changed to Amsoil ATF and this was even better - gears shifts are now almost imperceptible, even under hard acceleration, almost like driving a vehicle with a CVT type gearbox.
