Guys, the yards have 6 months from the time they get them to sell what they can after that it's crusher time. They are allowed to remove parts and store them for later sale. The owner has plans for this. One thing that hurts smaller yards is they rely on outside contractors for crushing service so their time window is smaller. The company I work for has 2 stationary crushers, 2 road crews with mobile crushers and 1 mobile unit in mothballs. With everything working and no equipment breakdowns they can crush about 250 vehicles a day.

I have watched the junk(salvage) yards in Philly change over the years. At one time you went with some tools, looked for the part you needed and some I could use later stuff, took it up front and haggled the price
Then the cataloged yard with radio. You went into the building stepped up to the counter and asked if they had your part(sometimes you could call). If not on hand they radioed out looking for it. They gave you a price, no haggle.
Some of the guys that worked for the yards had cars or trucks they hobbled together from stuff around the yard. Didn't always look good but they usually ran.
Then the yards started putting together their own stuff and the yards used car lot was born.
Then, go into a yard see if there are any tires or wheels around. Now, get there before the used tire sellers, or ask someone you know there to stash some for you.
Then, give me five bucks, you gotta take the wheel to. Now, their 100 bucks new, give me 40, you want the wheel for another 25? Time and business marches on.

Howdy everyone. I got out of the scrap yard a little early tonight. My daughter is staying with me for a few days so I'm on vacation from my main job.
I still have to got the scrap yard tomorrow night though. Until the CFC thing is over there is no such thing as time off.
BTW, the salvage yard associations are now petitioning to get the time limit extended to one year. Tree huggers don't agree. Tree hugger theory is the faster the parts supply dries up the faster the rest of the target vehicles are off the road.

Now, I'm all for preserving and protecting the environment, but I'll tell you what. I'd like to run a hose from my exhaust pipe straight into every tree hugging hippies mouth and just make them go away. My 18mpg "environment destroyer" suits me just fine, and it does better than my old gasser did.
