Replacing Plenum/Intake Gaskets on 4L OHV w. Pics and Diagrams
#2
Just did this...
Just purchased mine a month ago and a few short miles later, started dumping oil out the back of the lower intake manifold. I know that i did things kind of the hard way but it made the job a million times easier in the long run. I left the hood on for one, it didnt get in the way at all, plus it allowed me to do this over a few days. I pulled the entire front serpentine assembly. Sounds like a lot of work but it wasnt. Unbolt the ac compressor (if so equipped and lay to the left side where the airbox would be if not removed already. Unbolt the alternator and power steering pump and belt tensioner assembly and there is a huge amount of room now. Good time to replace the belt as well. When i pulled it all out, i did replace the fuel rail gasket. Might as well, you are already in there. Plus on any vehicle that is older its also a good time to replace the injector o-rings. You are there already. Also when re-intalling the valve cover gaskets, the Chilton manual calls out to put an 8mm dab of black rtv on each of the gasket bolt holes on the exhaust side. (I would imagine to help keep oil in as it the low point on the gaskets) Also a really good time to be replacing your spark plugs, i did. Also check the resistance of the plug wires. 7K ohms per foot of wire is what the Chilton calls out. Sounds like a ton of work and it probably is, but well worth the effort if you are in there already. Just my two cents worth and how it worked out for me.
