Improveing Stock Turbo With Out Replaceing

Hey guys i have a bone stock 02 7.3 PSD. i am not interested in doing massive MODS. i am quit pleased with its power. i am just looking to do simple things to improve on whats there. like making it breath better by doing TYMAR intake, 3.5-4" down pipe & maybe straight pipe exhaust. my question is when it comes to the turbo what is the best way to impove the performance of the stock turbo with out replaceing it?

a Wicked wheel (WW) or ATS compressor housing for the air coming in and a 1.0A/R exhaust housing to let it breathe..

It is the turbo from the 7.3 van. Since the vans did not have lots of room for an intercooler they used a 1.15 A/R exhaust housing. The stock one on your truck is a .84 A/R (???Someone verify this???) I believe... The larger exhaust housing lowers EGT's BTW

It allows you to flow more air at the cost of how fast your turbo spools up (i.e. boost lag)

However. With a 6.0 IC and a DP tuner the boost lag is not really noticeable IMHO.

I am very happy with mine. The 38R would be a good upgrade too but it's pricey ($1500-1800) where a van turbo can be had w/ a WW for somewhere in the $6-700 neighborhood.. Or i'll sell you mine for $2000 haha..

That being said.. the van turbo's are very hard to find now a days..

Get ahold of Clay at Riffraff Performance. He has a few for sale.

Any more questions plz feel free to ask.

Also.. I have a Tymar intake and I would recommend just doing the 6637 intake.. The bracket is not worth the $200.. If you really want one I have the bracket in my shop.. I removed it since it becomes a PITA removing all the time to toy w/ the truck

Andrew thanks for the info onthe van turbo. so you think i should just upgrade to 1.0 houseing & WW ? is there performance gains to be had by doing this or just lower my EGT's?

No performance gains, really. It just opens up the exhaust (lower EGTs) and keeps it from surging (eventually destroying the turbo).

I would think that would be the way to go. I tow a ton so I wanted the lowest EGT's possible.

Izzy.. wouldn't the 1.0 exhaust housing WW combo allow you to create more power? I mean assuming you pump more fuel in??

I really like the ATS housing and 1.0 exhaust housing that I am running right now. The ATS housing is quite a bit more than a WW though.

The stock up-pipes with the donut gaskets are inherently leaky and rob the exhaust turbine of drive pressure. Get a set of bellowed up-pipes and no more leaks and good consistent drive pressure. This will improve the performance of your stock turbo.

Yes, but unless you change injectors, it won't make a difference -- might even make less boost. Just like putting in the 38r without changing sticks isn't a much of a gain. Ya' need da fuel to drive it, man...

Good explanation Andrew - reps to you....

You could pretty much make your stock turbo into a van turbo - check out beans diesel performance.

Only problem with that is it won't give you a van turbo because the van's have a different exhaust fan from the trucks. That 1.15 housing I believe is for the 38R so you can upgrade from the 1.0 it comes with.
