Identifying a 1 bbl FoMoCo Carb from 1962 F-100

Hi all! First time poster and new member, so bear with any stupid questions. I'll try to do my research first.

My father and I just bought a 1962 F-100 (the 223cid I-6 engine) for $100 to take our hand at restoring it for a fun truck to use practically. Neither of us are mechanics (he's a farmer, I'm a computer programmer), but what the heck, right? We've always been tinkerers.

Pics here of the truck itself:

I'm starting out by working on rebuilding and cleaning up the carb, but I'm having difficulty identifying it. It's a FoMoCo carb, clearly...but the only other numbers or markings are a big number "4" on the throat (intake side), the letters "PN" stamped near the air cleaner side, and...that's about it. It's a single barrel, and all the websites and so forth I find mention FoMoCos from this era in 2 or 4bbl. So...I don't know.

I'm sure it's something obvious, but if you're familiar with these, would you mind taking a gander? I have NO idea if it was stock or not. The previous owner is pushing up daisies and his son doesn't recall any details about the truck, other than he knows it was running back in 1975. :P

Thanks in advance!

A 1bbl Ford carb would be an Autolite 1100 and that looks like what you have there since that is all 6 cyl. engines got. I see only one diaphragm which would be right for a stick shift. Now it would have been stock on the engine but whether that is still the original carb is anyone's guess.

I see you got yourselves into some fab work there. Good luck and welcome to the forum because the answers are here...

Welcome from Louisiana! Thanks for including the pictures. You're off to a good start on the site as we all like to see pics. Looks like a heck of a deal for $100. Some serious rust issues to take care of but it should be a fun project. BTW: In case someone asks or you are wondering, the bed on your truck is the "correct" bed but many non-Slick (61-66 Ford Trucks) enthusiasts may comment on the way it looks. It is affectionately known as a "wrong bed". It was used as a stop-gap for the last 1/2 of 62 and all of 63 to appease the complaintants who were unhappy with the Unibody style.

Whoa, I just looked at an interior photo where your shoe is in the picture and I see grass. What does it look like under the mat???

I just saw the shot with the mat pulled back...!

Makes me ask what the wives said...?

For 100 bucks...IMO you got a great deal...as for the carb...theres either a metal tag attached to it with some codes, or possibly some codes stamped into the mounting flange. The code give the specifis to the particular carb as there were slight differences depending on the truck and location it was used in.
If you get new plates, I wouldnt mind having the old ones...

tbm3fan: Thanks! That does appear to be correct; I even found full instruction for rebuilding it online, so I think I'm set -- just have to find the kit, but an auto shop ought to have it, I imagine.

Yes, there's a bit of fab work to be done, but given it's been in a grove for 30 years, not as bad as I originally thought it would be. Some corners, floor pan, and one frame crossmember -- at least, that I see now before I get it apart.

And yes, underneath the mat the driver's side is pretty much gone. There's about 5 layers of mats there and then...not much else. Lotsa grass. The nice thing is I should be able to cut the entire pans out and replace them at once.

My wife is actually fine with it -- she's always wanted a truck to drive around in that's older and stylish. She doesn't want me to break the bank, but otherwise, she's ok with it. My dad's wife is already wanting us to restore to mint condition her father's '53 Ford truck, so we'll try this one first.

(Luckily, I have a cousin who does body work and restores professionally, so he'll be a big help.)

gritsngumbo It was a great deal for $100 -- almost everything is there, glass, seals, interior, dials, wiring, the entire engine, drivetrain, suspension, and there's no major rust-outs.

Personally, I'm kinda rather happy that it's not a Unibody; that'll make my restoration life a lot easier to be able to take them apart separately.

camperspecial65 Yeah, I think it's the Autolite 1100, but there's no tags or codes that I can see...yet. But maybe once I get the years of grime off of it.

F Series Trucks with 223's used Auto-Lites and Holleys.

In fact, in the 1957/63 Ford truck parts catalog, there is not one Auto-Lite carb listed for any 1961/62 F Series truck.

1963 is the first year the Auto-Lite 1V carb was used. Holleys were also used on 1963/64's but Auto-Lites predomonate.

If the OP's 1962 F100 has an Auto-Lite, someone replaced the Holley that was there as original. It's also possible the engine is from a 1963/64.

The only way to ID the Auto-Lite (or Motorcraft) carb is by the ID number that was stamped on the FoMoCo tri-angular shaped carb tag that bolted to the airhorn.

Since the carb isn't original...if that tag is missing...what's it really from? What carb kit does it take? Is it an really an Auto-Lite or is it a Motorcraft?

btw: Why did Ford begin using Auto-Lite carbs instead of the Holleys they had used for decades?

Ford purchased the Auto-Lite Corporation in 1962, then were forced to sell it by the US Gov't in 1972, as the Gov't claimed Ford had a monopoly on autoparts.

NumberDummy: Yeah, I originally read that it might be a Holley 1940, but looking at pictures/diagrams of a 1940, it doesn't match that at all. Like I said, I have NO idea if this is stock or not; for all I know, he went to the junkyard and got a new carb for it.

I think you found a good truck. The grill is straight, the roof and bed floor look good too, and most of the trim is there. There is a lot of rust, but at least it's easy to see and not buried under bondo. That AM radio is looking good too.

Arrow Well...try again...

So, I went to AutoZone with my carb and the guy poured over it for awhile, but in the end the computer told him a '62 had a Holley 1940 carb, so that's the kit he ordered. I picked it up today and headed home.

Took apart the carb and found out -- no, it's definitely not a Holley. NONE of the kit parts match anything in the carb. So it has to be some version of Autolite, as it matches this kit's parts:

http://www.carburetor.ca/carbs/kits/CK013.htm

I printed that page and will take it to him tomorrow with the un-opened kit and tell him to figure out what to get me, regardless of what the silly computer says.

I forgot...I had a 1bbl from a truck I parted a few yrs ago...SAME as you got...

There IS a code stamped on the carbs mounting flange on the side...

using the fuel inlet as a reference point...lets say that is the front on the truck...for example now as im not sure its actual orientation on the engine...on the LH(drivers side REARWARD facing angled flange is where the code is at...it will be a C#TF and whatever the letter/s following it are...Let me know what you find...you may need some light sandpaper or steel wool to clean it, but it should be there...it is on mine plain as day...
I added a pic of mine in my gallery in the 'misc' section...shows exact location of carb ID stamping.
Its an AutoLite by the way...

AutoZone's catalog system is a mess.

Try GP-Sorensen part #96-333. That's listed as fitting the Autolite 1100 used on 1965 trucks with the 240 engine.

C8OZ9A586D .. Carburetor Kit (Motorcraft CT207A)

Fits: 1963/64 144/170 (car/Econoline) / 1965/69 170 (car/Bronco/Econoline) / 1964/69 200 (car/Bronco).

1963/64 223 I-6 (car/truck)/ 1965/69 240 I-6 (car/truck) / 1965/69 300 I-6.

If you go to a parts store, they can cross over the Motorcraft part number over to the brands they sell.

This kit is for the original Auto-Lite 1V carbs used 1963/69, the Motorcraft 1V replacement carbs used 1963/69.

1970 and later is not the same kit.

Got it today (I'll give AutoZone that much credit -- they get ordered parts in ,fast.) Looks to be the EXACT thing I need! Gaskets, valves, *****, everything. Sweet! Weekend project!

(not that I can even use the damned thing when it's done, but it'll be one thing done out of 100,000 -- and you have to start somewhere, right??)

MANY thanks to everyone who helped out on this one. Totally appreciated.
