Critical thing is do not remove the IP drive gear cover (four bolts pointed straight down and look like an easy way to remove the IP) and do your best to not unmesh the IP drive gear from the cam drive gear.
As long as the gears stay meshed, the gears will stay in time and the injection timing will be close to right if you line up the timing marks on the IP neck and the IP drive gear cover neck.
Yes removing the three nuts that hold the IP to the IP drive gear cover are a pain, but much easier than getting the gears back in time.
i talked to the ford dealership here,
they said it wont work, and that i need to find the exact same tag number.
and that different pumps are for different elevations,
with or with out e4oz or something like that,
and a few other specs that are distinct to the specific pump on a specific truck.
but i wanna hear it from you before i go further with anything.
I put the engine on TDC and I shined a light down in there to see the mark, but once you start lowering the pump, you cant see anything, so I guessed. Got lucky.
1990-1992 7.3L -- F or E, M/T -- DB2-4821 -- B,BB,C,D
1990-1992 7.3L -- F or E, E4OD -- DB2-4817 -- B,BB,C,D
The pump will probably run the engine, but will it run right, probably not.
so what this means is that i need to find one that matches mine which is;
FO DB2831 4817
the F at the beginning, the DB2, and the 4817 at the end is what matters..?? what is the M/T and the e40d and where do i find it on the tag? does it matter?
