Does anyone know the stock timing specs for a 1996 460?
I checked my timing the other day and it said 20 with the a/c pump OFF and around 30 when it clicked ON. Am I reading it right? I hook up the light just how it's suppose to be and let the truck idle for about three minutes and then checked it. Am I missing any steps? Please help.
The stock timing for my '97 F-350 w/460 is 10* BTDC. Mine runs better set at 12*.
Did you remove the timing spout before you checked the timing? Mine is located in the engine compartment on the driver's side fender near the firewall. The spout is light gray in color and may be wrapped in electrical tape.
My '97 is the old body style, so it should be similar to your '96?
I rechecked it again with the spout out of it and it said 8*. Do you think it should be higher and thats why I hear a tick sound coming from the passenger side exhaust ports?
Do you have a lot of miles on this motor?..having slack in the timing chain would loose the 2 degrees of timing from the original 10..ticking in the exhaust manifold..? chances are you have lost a couple of exhaust bolts or cracked the manifold..

The truck only has 80K on it and I replaced the exhaust manifolds with headers a while back becaust I thought the ticking was from a cracked manifold. I found out that was not the case after I bought a set of Remflex gaskets to make a perfect seal with my new headers and still it was ticking. It's only the passenger side and I can hear it clearly coming from the cylinder head where the exhaust exits. I started thinking it was a motor tick because of it being out of time. Thats when I checked it and found it to be at only 8*. Could the retarded timing cause it to tick from the one side or does what I described sound like internal problems? FYI, the truck has had this tick sound coming from the passenger side since I bought the truck from a dealership about 7 years ago and it the motor has always felt healthy but the noise is really annoying me.
