aod vs c6 vs. e4od ?

first , thanks for putting this section in!!

now , my question is this, i converted mmy 88 f150 to 4wd. i used 3 speed with overdrive. after using for a few months, i am thinking about swapping to auto box.
what do you guys think of the aod, the e4od, and the unbeatable c6. the only reason for not going right to a c6 is mileage. is the difference on highway and around town with overdrive really worth the effort and expense?
also does anyone know if a t18 from 2wd is too expensive to make ready for hooking to transfer case? i am hearing that main shaft has to be changed and that cost is not worth effort.the granny first gear in t18 is also something i keep thinking i might not mind having.
any input and similar experiences would be appreciated before i start down wrong road!

aod vs c6 vs. e4od ?

Just a bit of what I know. The aod and the e4od are essentially the same trans. One has a governor and the other is electronically acuated (e4od). Overdrive gears tend to lower highway rpm by about 200-300. My choice for serious towing or off road would be c6. For around the town and light work, aod or e4od. Personally though, I think I would try to put a zf 5 spd in that truck.

aod vs c6 vs. e4od ?

thanks for info russ. i did look into zf5 speed but it seems that all the ones i found have internal slave cylinder( 1990and later). i am concerned with how to adapt my master cylinder to this? i thought about changing to later master!
i did see some posts referring to this last spring, but can't recall the concensus on how to handle this.
aalso, what is fair price to pay for unit? thanks again for info.

As far as price on a ZF, you are probably talking at least 800 bucks for a junkyard model up to at least a $1,000 for a rebuilt. That is what is
keeping me from doing the swap right now. I found one from an individual in the next state in some classifieds for $650, but am leary about spending that much without some kind of guarranty. Besides, the drive I would have to make to pick it up eats up some of the savings. Like you, I am wondering how much gas savings there would be with the overdrive, I posted that question several months ago, but know one had any answers. I'll just stick with my T-18 for now I reckon.

The AOD and the E40D are most definitely not the same tranny. The AOD has been replaced by the AOD-E, which is now called the 4R70W. Even in it's present, vastly improved form it is smaller lighter and weaker than the E40D, which is now called the 4R100. If you're willing to put in stand alone electronics to run the tranny, the E40D is the way to go in a truck. See http://www.baumannengineering.com/ for info. If you want to avoid the electronics, the best source for (mechanical) AOD parts and technology is http://www.artcarr.com/

I know I'm just bragging but I picked up a ZF5 with 70K for $250. It was traded into a dealership during the C.A.R.S. program and I just waited for it to be shipped to the junkyard and then jumped on it. I got the tranny, t-case(1356), both driveshafts, master and slave cylinders, good flywheel, almost new clutch, starter, shifter, floopan, crossmember, and a good looking cab carpet for $250. Everything went together perfect and the truck(96 F350/460) shifts excellent.
