I recently acquired a 1356 T-case very cheap but it has a problem. It seems to occasionally act like a ratchet, power on it is OK, let off the throttle and it makes a ratcheting sound and it won't hold back any. This is what it was doing according to the guy I got it from and playing around with it in the garage seems to bear this out. It only seems to do it in 4L or 4H. It seems to be in the linkage because sometimes it does it and sometimes it don't. I don't think there is much wrong with it. Has anybody had any experience with this problem?
Thanks,
DannyP

I've got a borg warner 1345 which I'm told is similer to the 1356. This is in an 87 Bronco and I can't seem to keep the thing on the road. The first transfer case had bushings that let go 3 years ago due to a bad pump or slinger. It would drop out of "gear" whenever you let off the gas. Made a horrible grinding, banging noise and let go completely a few hundred miles from home, of course. Had it rebuilt. Same thing a few months later. Transmission place up the road opines that the borg warner 1345 is an inherently weak design. Anyway, got another completely rebuilt BW 1345 two years ago and it just started making noise; the rear yoke is loose (in/out) and the truck vibrates something fierce, most likely due a bearing. Anyway, it also does the same "ratcheting", as you describe, when in 4x4.
I know I shouldn't say this because it will probably happen on the way to work this morning, but I have never had a bit of problem with my 1356. It has a little over 200,000 on it. I thought I would try to fix this other one if it isn't much wrong just to have a spare.

Hey Danny, if ever you decide that this transfer case is worst off that it's worth and you ever decide to sell it, I'm looking for a case to put the good guts of an automatic t-case that cracked after the front differential took a hit. Just a thought before you toss the whole shebang into the dark corner of your garage.
