transfer case i.d.

I have a '76 f100 with a factory 360 and a 4-speed. The transfer case looks like an np205 but it has 4 bols on the idler shaft cover instead of three and the selector lever only has two positions...2wd and 4wd. No neutral or low range. What the heck is this thing?

They did put some Dana 24's? single speed t-cases in some of the F-100's, think this is what you have. I'll check a little more when I can and see if my memory serves me well! I'll post back then!

The Dana 24 was the 2-spd model used in the 72 and older F-250's. The single speed model used in the F100's was the Dana 21. Hard to know what you have for sure, but it wouldn't be the Dana 24.

Hey, thanks Stockman for puttin' me straight! Brain fade thing again! Yeah, it's a 21, only in F-100's from sometime around '70 to around '76, holds appx. 1.25 pints of fluid, sorry, couldn't really find out much of anything else about them though other than NP205's were also listed for F-100's of the year starting 1974, possible swap if your lookin' for low range.

The only thing about it that bothers me is that I know absolutely nothing about it. I realy wouldn't use a low range enough to warrant swapping it out. I've just never seen one and other than you guys, I haven't found anyone who has. Do you know much about them? Are they rugged or are they weak?

Hi Stingray,
The 21 and 24 are both all-gear driven units, these are plenty strong for mild to moderate use, just don't try to put 500+ hp in front of them and don't think you will have any problems. Do keep up on the fluid changes, there isn't alot in there! I believe the difference between the two was only the low-range on the 24. The difference between the 21/24 and the 205 is the 205 has constant mesh helical gears, where as the 21/24 are straight cut gears, I think the output for the rear driveshaft is also on the opposite side from the 205. The reason these are not popular is the single speed, most wanted a 4x4 with low range, but at that time there must have been at least some interest in just having the 4-wheel drive with no frills. One other benefit I can see is the weight savings, I can't believe it's that much though. Hope this helps you a little bit anyway! Chuck
