i own a 2008 f250 crew cab 6.4 deisel. I use it to tow a 30' fifth wheel which weighs 7500 pounds. I have 15000 miles on the truck and althought I have no problems with the brakes I was going to change the front pads as I have changed the pads on all my vehicles once a year and have never run into trouble. while researching the pad part numbers and price i ran across a furom where someone who stated he got 100,000 miles out of his first set of front brake pads. I am leaving August 1st for a 5000 mile trip and thought I'd change them before setting out. has anyone heard of pads lasting that long? i like to change the pads before the start to screech.
Welcome to FTE! I've never changed my brake pads yearly. I haven't changed the ones that my truck came (bought used at 59,000 miles 2.5 years ago) and I have no idea how many miles are on them. Have you looked at them to see if they are thin?

I don't change mine until they need changing.(worn out)
I guess I phrased my question wrong I realize I'm going to have to look at the pads. what i'm asking is what is the average milage your getting out of factory brake pads? 30k or more is something i've never experienced with any vehicle i've owned. although none of the vehicles were an f250. I just find it hard to beleive that. my thoughts were 15k and i'm about to leave on a 5k trip. seems to me if the pads are below half I'd probably change em just to avoid any trouble on the road. thanks for the feed back
Holy cow! Yearly! Man, that's some maintenance schedule. When I had my brakes done, it was because they were squealing. The shop said they were still at about 50 percent (front brakes only), but I just didn't want to listen to the squeal anymore. That was at about 55,000 miles. I now have over 111,000 miles and the brakes are just fine. No squealing, and no troubles. I also tow a 26' travel trailer (weekender type towing) and a 4200 pound boat. Once a year is overkill, but if it makes you feel better, more power to you.
My 94 F250 wears brakes out in about 30-40K miles. I do a fair amount (30%) of towing(8K #s) and see a fair number of steep hills.
The front brakes wear quickest and it seems like the inner pads go MUCH quicker than the outer pads. I have eaten two rotors because I did not check the inner pads well or often ehough.
So check your pads, especially the inners. These are harder to get a good look at without pulling the tires. Mine also wore unevenly, ie more wear towards the center of the axle versus less wear on the outer part of the pad. So like I said take a good thorough look at the inner pads.
Also check the dust boots on the pistons, these can melt or just dry rot.
Unless you ride the brakes, you should be fine with only 15K miles on them.
