What size fuel tank?

I have a 99 4x4 F350 CC short bed. I have the original sticker and it shows a 29 gallon fuel tank as standard and a mid-ship fuel tank as part of a preferred equipment pkg 617A that came with the truck. Also checked the owners manual, from what I can tell this is a 38 gallon tank? That is what I have in the scangauge but after a 300 mile towing trip the scangauge always needed lots of adjutment, like 15% more on one fillup and then 10% less fuel on the next fillup. Scangauge on my other vehicles is very accurate, like a tenth of a gallon per fillup. Wanted to make sure I had the right size gas tank. Any ideas?

Short bed is 29 gal and long bed is 38 gallons. You can actually put more in it if you are patient and slowly fill towards the top as the fill and vent tubes extend several inches into the tank and the capacity is based off the auto-shutoff which will leave some room at the top. I did the harpoon mod and I routinely get 34 gallons into my 29 gallon tank.

So if I have a short bed with a mid-ship fuel tank from the preferred equipment package what exactly do I have?

A shortbed is a 29 gallon tank. The longbed is 38. They are all midship and the difference in capacity is related to the difference in wheelbases and room under the truck for the tank. Transfer-Flow and Titan both make larger aftermarket tanks though.

On Edit: The Titan and Transfer-Flow tanks are for diesels...as of now neither makes a tank for gas powered trucks. Also, below is a link to the 1999 order guide for the F-350:

Whats the harpoon mod? I always hated the fact that it only hold 29 gals.
Thanks,

Someone explained it in depth some time back, including pictures. Essentially, you cut off part of the vent pipe inside the tank so the fuel won't cover it as quick and cause the pump nozzle to shut off. It was explained that both diesels and gassers use the same tank and venting and that you should only do this on a diesel since a gasser needs the room for expansion.

The diesel trucks don't use the vacuum line to the tank, so we can fill 'er all the way up without any worries.
