Stout 460 Motor mounts

I am in need of a stout pair of motor mounts for my F-150 that will have a rebuilt stroked 460 running 525 hp and 660 FPT. I've seen some models on the net with polyurethane and figured that is the best route to go with. Not interested in the solid mounts for fear of stress cracking. Please give some advice.

Autofab has polyurethane mounts. Advance Adapters sells them (Autofab) too.

I'm running them, no complaints. Well made too. Also shown below is a transmission mount.

Before I installed my 460, I spoke with the guys at Ford racing. They recommended the mounts from L & L. Thats what I used, and they are rock solid.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you till me if the Autofab ( I assume by the picture you are showing, your are 4wd's) or the L & L's require the use of the oem frame perch or are they mounted directly to the frame? I did see on the Autofab site the 2wd's. Are they direct bolt in? Thanks,Tom

The L & Ls use their own perches and mounts. I used the 2 wd application, but I believe they also make a 4 wd application. The L & L perches look to be 2-3 times thicker than the factory perches and are reinforced.

another suggestion for EXTRA safety is to run a chain from the front left side of the motor down to the frame etc. leave some slack, but keep it tight anough so the motor can't over twist and tear a mount off. works great.

I kept tearing the left mount in half on my 300-6 4-speed so I chained 'er down and it's been good since.

The Ford Racing guys said if I was going to use the stock mounts to use a turnbuckle to hold the thing down. With the L & Ls, the monster doesn't move.

Autofab does make 4WD units for the 460 for F-150, 250 and 350. Mine are 4WD units for a 77.5 (will fit 78, 79 also) F-150. The are a direct bolt in. I'm also using L&L short headers, and they fit fine with no interference. I thought the 4x4 Autofab mounts were on their website, but you may need to call.

Performance Unlimited and L&L both make conversion mounts that bolt to the stock motor mounts. I did not go with them because I have seen some instances where they the rubber or Polyurethane splits. See link...http://www.medicine.wisc.edu/~mrm/bronco/460/ BUT also note that many people never have any problems with their engine mounts (L&L or Performance Unlimited). NC specialties also sells OEM type mounts and special perches (http://www.ncspecialties.com/autobod...ches/index.htm)

And to throw one more in... West Coast Broncos (www.westcoastbronco.com) has also shown a conversion mount for Big Broncos and F series but I don't think they have begun production.

I was trying to find the L & L,s on there website to get a look but can't find their site. Help. By the way, I get the impression that the L&L are rigit mounted rather than a little soft with urthane like the Autofab. I am concerned about stress cracking with rigit ones. This truck will be a show/weekend driver with a kick in its rearend, not a racer, would like to cut down on vibration also. Tom

I have found these to be a lot better then hte L&L mounts personally.

http://performanceunlimited.com/cust...ginemount.html

If your running a race engine go with solid mounts though.

Autofab makes quality stuff - so I will be a 2nd vote for them. I'd run them before anything else listed above. 1 thing to know about Autofab though is they make SOOO much more than what they list on the website. If you want something you don't see there then just call. Chances are they make it and they just don't show it online.

I will also 2nd the idea of a chain "limiting strap" for the motor just in case you break a mount.

As for the "solid mounts" for racing - take the autofab mounts, and machine delrin bushings instead of the polyurethene ones that come with them. Solid enough for racing with just enough give to not jar you. Just remember to keep your tranny mount the same as whatever you go with for motor mounts = rubber and rubber, poly and poly or solid and solid!

NEVER run solid trans mount with solid motor mounts unless you enjoy replacing bellhousings or cases.

That is a big no no.

the stock style 2wd mount 77-79 era mounts are junk. My 460 moves around so much that it pulls the throttle open when you take off. I have replaced the mounts twice, and no improvement.I think the trans mount is actually limiting it somewhat. The motor can't escape because of the clamshell design but it moves around within the mounts, alot. I would look at something poly , your chassis will flex some.
