Maybe someone, someday will remake these tank shrouds. They would make a small fortune in no time. There is a market for them out there and I don't ever see it going away. Wish I had a big stamping press and dies.

Yeah sorry. I work on the road so time is limited. If you take your time you can make a pretty decent set with just a vice and a hammer

need pics of side plastic tank filler connection

yes on the skip plate being the support bracket
yes mine has just enough metal to hold it up, but no skidding protection left

i need help man.

side plastic tank question
rubber filler connects to metal pipe, metal pope went inside plastic tank. had a bid wad of rtv sealing it.
I'm no expert but i am guessing this isn't right and where my gas fumes were coming from.
i cleaned rtv off and there is pic

You should type a new thread and ask this question. This thread dates back to 7/6/2009.

The parts catalog pics will look familiar, because...

The advantage here on FTE is, there are far more members that own like trucks.

Bronco Graveyard now sells an aluminum sender cap that looks good. I have one but will wait while the plastic one I got on this forum gives out. I have some O ring gaskets if anyone needs some.

Okay, I read this entire thread and I didn't see any stupid questions or statements so it's my obligation to give it a whirl. I have the bed off and my midship plastic (aftermarket replaced in the 90's) tank is being held up by magic.

I am basically relegating Fi-Fi to "functional" and no more. So........here's the stupid question.

Can I simply make some aluminum straps to hold the tank up? Even a nylon strap from a ratchet strap?

Make the aluminum straps, and use the nylon (or something better) as an anti-chafe pad, between the straps and the tank.

2X on this. Or better yet... buy yourself a set of bicycle tire tubes (27" diameter or larger) from your local bicycle shop. Cut out the tire stem, and voila! You have an anti-chafe ant-vibration pad to use with your aluminum straps.

Also... consider that aluminum and steel touching causes Galvanic Corrosion. If possible, isolate aluminum from direct contact with steel via painted surfaces, rubber grommets, or other means, etc.

I have heavy duty nylon strap material which is 2" wide. Is there any reason I couldn't simply support the tank with that?

Bingo!!! We have a winner!!!

A few hours after I typed that, I went out and dropped my front strap to see if I could find my leak. What I found was severe rust behind/under the strap. The thing is that I have metal straps with some sort of nylon strap or something to insulate the tank from the metal strap. I now know that those nylon straps probably held water and accelerated the rust on the outside of the tank. A bunch of gas dripped out of the nylon strap when I pulled it out from behind the metal strap.

So I rescind my advice to use the nylon straps as an insulator, and will try to get ahold of an inner tube when I install my new tank. There is a bicycle shop around the corner from me, so I should be golden.

You can use just the nylon, but I don't know that I'd trust it for long.

I see no problem using aluminum straps for this. Lots of semi tanks are mounted like that. But like the other said be conscious of galvanic corrosion and chafing on the tank.
