I have an 89 Bronco with a 5.0 and AOD transmission. I suspect my torque converter is bad (I get the dreaded shudder under load). Once I get the transmission out, is there any way I can tell for sure that is is the t.c.? I want to make sure that the problem is fixed before I go through the trouble of removing and re-installing the tranny.
A shudder under load sounds like this could be tune-up related, or a weak/dead cylinder. Check these out and you may save yourself some work. With the engine running at idle, pull one plug wire at a time, and there should be a drop in idle. Be sure to use insulted plug wire pliers for this.

Does this shudder occur all the time while under load or when shifting into O/D. The reason I asked is because my father's '95 F-150 shuddered when going into O/D and while we thought the tranny was on the way out it turned out to be a simple fix! The guy at the tranny shop said he has seen many Ford O/D transmissions with this problem. The way he fixed ours was he dropped the oil pan and while changing the filter, he re-torqued the transmission's valve body bolts and wha-lah the shuddering disappeared, that was 73,000 miles ago. I hope this helps in any way, and maybe save you a few $$$.
