I have a 1985 F-350, and I've checked the Ford specification book and on the web, but the tag on my differential doesn't match anything I can find. Here's what it says:
V 170 A
10 10 2 5G16
Could the 5G16 mean 5.16:1? Or could it be a date code? Does one of the 10's mean 10" ring gear diameter? Is V 170 a code for the Van Dyke plant? Does any of this make sense to anybody?
The door sticker rear axle code is 45, which isn't listed anywhere for 1985 models. Later in the '90's, it's a 4.10:1.
Those codes can get wacky. The door code on my '82 referred to a 2.73:1, but that was only available in '83. Course, not like that matters anyway. One of it's previous owners swapped in a 3.25:1.
