More and easier black smoke

A little over a week ago, I put the wicked wheel on and a a new 6637 filter. I'm definitely noticing that it is easier to make soot when I lug the engine, and it seems to be a bit more than before. So my question is- Which is it that is causing the improved ease and amount, the WW or the improved air flow?

Smoke is unburned fuel. Lack of air. the new 6637 isn't causing a restriction but, the WW has a different compressor map, and is not producing enough airflow at the RPM that you are seeing the smoke.

You may also have a boost leak. Check the compressor housing o-ring, the intake manifold o-ring, and clamp.

At 1st I was thinking both will give u more air so u should get less unburnt fuel but now I'm thinking the added air is making the computer add more fuel for the added air

I think I'm confused myself

It seems like the boost is right, in fact the lower intake boots were a little more than hand tight when I took it all apart, so I think that if anything, things are tighter with regards to the boots anyway.

How do I check those o-rings exactly Brandon?

Did you pay attention to the compressor inlet housing o-ring when you took the housing off? If it's ripped or not seated correctly that would be a problem. The other o-ring he's talking about is the outlet o-ring where the housing fits in to the intake spider.

I didn't remove the turbo from the engine. I did it with the turbo attached.

Well, I WAS going to post this:
"More black smoke = less air at first. Mine does that because of the 1.15 A/R exh housing (lag). Unless the PCM is detecting more air in there and dumping more fuel, I'm not sure why it would make MORE smoke."

...but got distracted by work. Sounds like you've got your answer. WW moving less air. Makes sense to me.

WW will not produce more boost than a stock wheel. It actually produces the same, just at different RPM points than the stock wheel does.

Jason, you will need a boost leak detector, and a spray bottle of soapy water. The compressor housing oring (if you used the one that was already on there) is pretty easy to get out of orientation, and not seal correctly.

I make a little more black smoke, on the bottom end, since my 38r install. I can throttle where it doesn't. Just seems to be more when slightly lugging. Normal to me. Mileage is good, so I don't worry about it. The other day at work I kept blowing smoke clouds, when I punched it, at one of our dump truck drivers behind me on the haul road(25 mph speed limit).

Yes, but you still took the housing off.

So a concoction of soapy water sprayed on the housing looking for bubbles then?

And a boost leak detector, either homemade or buy one from dieselsite. But are you making as much boost on the top end as before? Maybe it's just the WW. This is what I was told is the downside to the WW, and it was recommended not to use one, said it kills the low end boost, and isn't as good on the top end either.
